God those Perry plastic ACW horse sculpts are superb.

I'm not a big fan of the oil wipe method - it usually looks a bit crap.
But true to form, you've made a reall good job of it so far, Lt.
Looking forward to the finished unit.

(Cavalry take a damned long time, don't they?  ;))

You can then use the saved time watching the oils dry... from what I recall, it takes ages (up to a year for specific brands) for oil paints to fully cure. Looks rather nice on that horsey, but I´ll stick to acrylics.

I use oil washes with a good thinners the flash cures it quite quickly.

I know what Captain Blood say sometimes it works better than others, good for fast painting and givng a dirty look to figures.

That horse looks great.

The horse looks absolute super.

Oils do work quite well for horses.  It gives a very nice texture as well.

Looking forward to some superb, as always, results.

Undercoat Humbrol black. VMC Cavalry Brown as base. Cover all horse flesh in Vandyke brown (Daler Rowney Oil) .

Wait a few minutes. Than gently strike over the exposed areas. Repeat this and use more presure to create the highlights.

Still very glossy (middle). Horse on the left is VMC Basalt grey and the right one VGC Charred Brown both painted with Lukas Ivory Black instead of Vandyke Brown. The method works fine with darker tones I think.

Do you water the oils down at all? Also, how long do they take to dry?

They look great and I'm impressed as the ones I've seen done like this before, really didn't.
So many projects..... so little time.......

A very interesting technique, I have some Perry ACW Cavalry to do, I may give this a go.

Would also be interested to hear the drying time.

Cheers

I let the horses dry for a week. You can paint the riders in this time  :D

Has anyone ever tried the same method using tube acrylics?

If they have does it work as well?

Some spots need a second coat of matt varnish. But I had a little accident and need a new pot now :smt013  I spend an hour to clean up my desk. I also will add some highlights to the horseflesh as I did with the standard bearers horse.

Excellent! :)

the only problem is that the bottle caps that you use don't seem to be from the moonshine still!  ;D that's not very southerner!  ;D
