Detachable infantry from base
« on: September 30, 2016, 08:14:38 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how I can make a larger circular base that I can attach 3 individual infantry men on.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of basing each fig onto a washer, but not sure how to make this happen after that.

Thanks

magnet tape sounds like the way to go?

Iirc, Captain Blood did some beautiful movement trays for his WotRs stuff. Combine that method with magnetic tape and you should be sorted for Es and whizz.

Magnetic tape should work for plastic figures, but metal will probably fall off when you move the base or set it at an angle. You can embed three small neodymium magnets in the large base (sabot), one for each mini. Combine that with some base work to blend it with the mini bases and that will hold the figures securely.

It would depend on the scale, I've found that 15mm metal miniatures based on eurocent coins actually stay attached when suspended upside down. And that is with cheapo magnet tape.

Thinking these might work

Put the figs on a washer that would fit in the 3 slot sabot bases

I did a few of my bolt action team units like this. Put a thin tin sheet on the base, and strong magnets on the mini's It worked OK, but in the end I would up just glueing them down. I have done all my WHFB movement trays like this and did not have any issues with the plastic figures, but the metal bolt action figures would be separated from their base if they got bounced around in transport.

Buy a complete extra set of miniatures! Put some on single bases and the duplicates on the multiple bases! Simples!
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

I used 3mm MDF pierced with washer-sized holes and backed with magnetic sheet for this base:

The two crewmen right next to the gun are integral to the base, because it was too tricky to get them close enough if they were separately based. All the rest are separate.

These figures are 15mm on 12.5mm washers, and the magnetic sheet has no problem holding them. The sockets are quite deep, and that gives them some additional support — probably enough that under normal game use, the figures would stay in place even without the magnet (as long as I din't actually tip it upside down).

You could also embed or attach small magnets to/into the feet of the models and use some nail heads or magnets on the base, too. You cna cover these with a thin layer of sand mix. This way you won't need slots on the abse at all.

A neodynium magnet measuring 5mm by 1.5 should be most sufficient for this.
