If anyone out there has some experience of painting Play Mobil, any advice would be appreciated!

I just prime over them with my regular primer (Vallejo airbrush) and paint as usual with acrylics. No special preparations.
I like my games like my orange juice: pulpy with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners

I am aware that Playmibil used to produce blanks for the customer to paint - somewhere I have one - a totally white figure.

I would have thought that plain acrylic would work.

Don't they do pre-paints?

Yes, but then they don't look like part of a miniatures game, they look like the children's toys that they are.

Thanks everyone. That is helpful. I didn't see why they wouldn't take normal techniques, but it might have been a costly mistake to ruin them for the wantofasking about people's experience.

Nice pyramid!

I used Halfords grey primer for a base.  It works quite well.

The kind of plastic used in Playmobil (and many other toys), ABS plastic, has a slightly oily surface to it which makes for poor adherence to water based acrylic paints. A good scrub with kitchen cleaner and a quality spray-on primer generally alleviates the problem.

Very helpful indeed! I have washed resin miniatures before, but didn't think about washing this time. Obvious when you think about it, but I didn't. A very valuable suggestion. Thanks.
