Are there any Wargames shops stll in existance? the kind of place that had boxes of used figures piled all over the place and generally in a muddle but a delight for a good rumage lol

Generally the ones here are clean (not musty) and have newer miniatures in plastic and cardboard on racks.  I actually prefer that since Iron Wind Metals is bringing back some of my favorite "larger" (not 3/6/15/18mm) figures for filling in legacy units.

The internet is quite the source for picking locally at Miniature Market.  Game Nite not much in the way of older miniatures either but nice terrain building materials and newer more "popular/cool kid" miniatures.

There seem to be a fair few around Melbourne, although being in the outer suburbs and not driving, I don't make it out to many, unfortunately  :o Always been impressed with Mind Games' stock in the city, though - massive amount of board gaming and roleplaying stuff downstairs and a decent sized room dedicated to miniatures upstairs. A lot of the shelf space is taken up by GW and Reaper Bones, but they've got some historical stuff in there too and a good selection of MDF terrain. No discounts on GW stuff over here, though, only massively inflated RRP, unfortunately.
