Forest Cannibals - A CONGO Project
« on: 26 October 2016, 08:34:34 PM »
Hi Folks,

I've also been bitten by the tropical bug called CONGO and I really like the forest tribes. The brilliant HVM showed me the Northstar miniatures for this topic which are Cannibal-Themed.
I want to give these fellas a very realistic look, drawing inspiration from real existing tribes in termes of warpaint, but also artifacts in ethnologic museums (I happen to live in Paris and visited the excellent Musée du Quai Branly, which has a nice collection of central African masks). However I want to also show the Cannibal theme, but in a more subdued tone, with maybe hints here and there.
Cannibalism was largely a myth invented by white colonisers, designed to portray the native people in the most 'savage' way possible. However in the CONGO Rulebook there's the idea that some tribes played this role to scare of enemies. I really like this idea, a tactic that is largely used in by insects, borrowing attributes of really dangerous species to frighten possible predators.

Here are the first miniatures:

Bases still need to be done! If someone knows of scenic elements that would fit into the jungle please let me know. I haven't found the right stuff yet. I'm going to put rooibos-tea on the base as leaves and litter but I need more greenery.
Shields will be done in batches once I've got most of the soldiers done!

Please let me know what you think!

Agreed, while cannibalism DID happen it was generally very ritualized and not just a bunch of guys randomly eating people, it didn't help the Force Publique used the threat of it to keep men in line.
