What good is a three-legged toad (demon)?
« on: November 13, 2016, 03:17:37 PM »
So the other day I got in a Reaper mail order package with one of their rare mispacks, one of the toad demons in the box came with two left rear legs and no rights.  They sent me a full model as a replacement (complete with note to the packer to check to make sure it had four unique legs) so no complaints there, but what to do with the three-legged one that left me with?  After a brief debate about making a peg-legged version or doing a diorama with a Bretonnian knight standing next to its butchered corpse and chowing down on a severed leg (oh old school GW, how I loved you) I settled on this idea:

Bones is thankfully easy to work with, so doing the major cuts required to make the surfacing-from-the-swamp version was pretty easy.  The big 60mm bases made it easier to do some swamp detailing as well.

Even managed to salvage most of the forearms I trimmed down to fit the waterline model, and of course I've still got two perfectly good left legs in the bits box as well.  Maybe I'll manage a Brettonian gourmet model yet.  :)

The surfaced version (which could be the same beastie, or each could be used separately) is also lightly converted, with one forearm repositioned and a tentacle from another Reaper model added.  Looks creepier that way, and I do like my creepies.

Pretty happy with them, and I've been having fun with the latest batch of weird swamp monsters.

I like what you did there! Not a fan of the lipped bases but they do come in useful for emerging minis. Nice water effect too.

Brilliant fix for a miscast!

They look creepy and wonderful.

Would you mind giving me a run down on how you did that base?  (the water one)

It was an experiment, but IIRC it consisted of "apply a layer of unthinned white glue (Elmer's for ex), sprinkle and unevenly with some very fine railroad ballast (sand might work just as well), let dry a bit, then apply a second layer of thinned white glue and dry overnight.  Prime black, base with a dark green (brown might work too), do a couple of stages of highlighting in various paler greens and browns, then apply a heavy wash of GW Athonian Camoshade (a dark brownish green).  Finish off with some brush-on gloss coat for the wet look.  It's best to go fairly light with the highlighting, the shade wash will darken it quite a bit, and the gloss coat always makes things seem a bit darker as well.

I like them for dimensional gateways and similar "portal" effects as well, as you may have noticed from other projects.  And as you said, they're nice for pools and fountains and the like.  Used to be strictly a "beveled edge" man myself but these days I'm pretty sold on the lipped ones.  Too much Privateer Press and Malifaux across my table to resist, I guess.

Nice. Good fix too. That whole set is suitably slimy and menacing.

Exactly.

I'm not a big fan of the lipped bases, either, but they work great for this sort of thing.

Great idea on the 'emerging from the water' pose as a way to deal with missing parts - simple, elegant, thematic - it's perfect!

Thanks.  Lemons make lemonade, right?

Apparently someone else liked them as well, the lot sold for a decent price on ebay the other day.  So that's good.  :)
