[FIW] Which French Line Infantry?
« on: November 17, 2016, 09:37:17 PM »
Evening,

Most of my FIW miniatures are from Galloping Major... and I love them! I've just ordered some Highlanders from redoubt and I'm waiting for GM to release their British Line infantry next year.

I'm currently looking for compatible French Line infantry. I've had a look around and I know that Redoubt have some older models which would work. However I was wanting to see what else was out there.

Kind Regards
Andy

Andy, as you know the Redoubt match Galloping Major perfectly and their range of French is very good.  Sadly most of the other ranges don't match, most being too slight (Warlord/Conquest/Perry).  I am not sure if Front Rank figures match but they must have some french of the right period.

The Front Rank range are slightly smaller, not by much. I have a couple of their officers mixed in with my Redoubt French and they work fine.
Another option are the Foundry SYW figures which are now a viable via Casting Room Minaitures. Rob Baker sculpts, slightly cruder, but with  lots of character and a good fit with the GM range.
Alternatively wait until Lance does the French, next year maybe. ;)

I suspect I might be waiting a while! Poor Lance being a one man band and all!

I do really like Front rank's SYW French. http://www.frontrank.com/product-category/18th-century/seven-years-war/syw-french/

I was wondering about crusader? North Star seem to pair them with their miniatures... If I'm correct the NS are similar in size to Galloping Majors.

Aren't the Redoubt a little crude?

Redoubt looks a little crude indeed. Crusaders are all marching… and Front Rank, well, it’s one of their earlier range and they might look a tad small by today’s "28mm standard"

Spoil of choices = dilemma lol

A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://www.kingdomtitans.ca/us/

When you are not so hard in historical details you can use Black Hussars seven years french. They are european, but some may fit well.

Hi,

Following the link below, you'll find manufacturers comparison in term of size.
It's in French, from the M&T french forum but the photos speak for themselves :

The Front Rank figures are almost a head shorter than Lance's GM sculpts. The Redoubt figures are ok, not fantastic sculpts but do the job. If I was to do the French again before GM release them then I might be tmepted by the Casting Room ones.

Have a look at the Casting Room Miniatures here:

I think i would go redoubt or foundry/casting room miniatures. I went foundry brits to fit GM miniatures and they worked reasonably well. Check out flags of war thread as he has british but has also used crusader and redoubt. The compagne are lovely

For me I would use the Foundry Casting Room ones or Black Hussar. Casting Rooms are good big chunky figs and paint up really easily. They also have a sale on just now. I have a load of the Black Hussar ones as well and they are gorgeous figures but smaller than Redoubt and Galloping Major. I’ll be painting the Black Hussar ones for my project.

For me the Redoubt Infantry are odd shaped with small legs. I have a loads of spare if you need any Andy.

For me size is not a big issue as long as they look good. I have got hung up on size so many times but when they are on the table it's never an issue.

Thanks for the advice all!

I think I'll go for Casting Room French. Time is still on my side though! I won't need them until Lance's wonderful British Line are made available next year.

Kind Regards
Andy
