Is PVA And Superglue Best Option For A Star Trek "Horta"?
« on: November 22, 2016, 05:56:06 PM »
Here's the creature "Horta", from OTS episode "The Devil In The Dark":

NOTE:  I'm really looking for some way of recreating the effect of "raised" bubbling in the cracks between rocky areas.

1) So, is combining PVA and cyanoacrylate (super glue) the best solution for creating a half dozen of them for 15mm gaming?

2) If so, is there a problem using acrylic paints on it afterwards?  Or does that create a new (and unwanted) reaction?

Thanks,

Dan
PS.  I might be laid up at the moment but, as you can see, my brain is already busy, planning my next project.  :)

What about polystyrene cement? That dries all globby like that.

You might want to try melted hot glue gun glue (=friendly plastic / polymorph / worbla deco) The kind you put into hot water to soften up, when warm it shapes like clay and then when it cools it is hard plastic. Should be relatively easy to make those with such plastic.

Wow!  It doesn't have all the "veins" I was after, but those look great!  I really thought I was very familiar with the website, so can't believe I hadn't seen them before.  Thanks so much!

Happy to be of service  :D

They're obviously not perfect likenesses but a very good starting point.

Do you have plans for Starfleet crew too? Any ideas now that Astrominiatures have ceased trading?

I bought a set or two from Astro Miniatures a couple of years ago, before I found out about all these surgeries.  The figures have been in storage, so I haven't seen them in a while.  But as soon as I am able to, I am definitely going to retrieve them and get to work on painting them.

For now I can only plan and do little things in preparation.

Dan
PS.  Seems like the Astro figures are now available via ebay:

As for the Horta, I would have thought low-expansion foam sealant for window jams, with 'veins' of hot glue would be pretty quick and simple, though I've not used the foam for more than sealing winter air out.

You might want to pick up one of the light-up Galileo shuttlecraft too. They're about 8cm long (the full-size shuttlecraft is 8.5m long according to the blueprints) so they scale pretty well with 15mm minis.

You could simply use cat litter and UhU.
Cat litter will clump and stick with super glue or UhU,Then let the UhU drip and run over the top.

Have you thought of using bb pellets stuck into a green stuff body?
