Committing a Potential Atrocity
« on: November 29, 2016, 09:49:05 PM »
I have a huge collection of HaT miniatures for the Zulu Wars but not looking forward to painting all that red. I'm contemplating painting them in khaki. Is there any shred of evidence that the Brits wore khaki during the Zulu campaign...My search comes up negative... :( Thanks

Yep red coats...thousands of em!  lol
Ok there were a few in blue and green.
My suggestion is to use some army painter red spray. Then paint the other details

Red's more fun to paint than khaki, any day. And there's generally less of it, as red trousers never really caught on in the British Army, unlike across the channel. I'd be moaning if it were the other way around - about having to paint "all that khaki."

Shepstone's Horse and the Frontier Light Horse wore yellow-brown corduroy uniforms that could charitably be described as khaki, if you really have a fetish for beige. :)

Simeon Kambula's Edendale Contingent apparently wore a khaki tunic. Oh! ... but this doesn't help you with regular infantry.

Not sure if this technique will relieve your stress over painting tons of red uniforms, but it will certainly make it easier to deal with.
Spray prime your Brits with red brown auto primer.  Let dry.
Use brown ink to slop on the uniforms, flesh and helmets.  Let dry.
Dry brush the uniforms with red.  Let dry.
Highlight red uniforms with reddish/orange.  You guessed it....let dry.
Now use two tints of flesh (one darker, than another lighter) to high light the flesh of the figures
Paint white straps.
Paint the trousers blue, boots black and use khaki to highlight the brown inked helmet.

I use the same technique for all red uniforms and saves a TON of time.

I found some red Testors flat primer I'm going to try. Going to hit them first with that then paint blue pants, flesh then all the white stuff...thinking on mid tone Army Painter Quick Shade to seal and highlight them and lastly matte finish...I've done 28mm Foundry and they turned out nice, just not wanting to do 1/72 scale stuff...

Ive started cutting them from the sprues today and putting them in baggies per unit...here goes nothing...or everything...

I take a little different view. They are your figures, this will be your game, and this is a hobby based on having fun.
Thus, do whatever you like. Most people you will game with will likely never know the difference.
