diecast model Ts upgrades, (updated)
« on: December 04, 2016, 02:10:51 AM »
OK. On another thread I said that I had model Ts in various sizes. I did some photos and also some research on some websites.
Here is the result
a group shot: Left to right, matchbox 1/64, corgi 1/64, Lledo, Oxford Diecast, Matchbox Models of Yesteryear 1/42, Matchbox MOY 1/35, Corgi Classics (1/32?)

The biggest and the smallest, with two  standard 28mm neither works too well :

the two 1/64 models. The Matchbox is much better made, the Corgi is very simplified, and I have some with horrible nasty wheels.

Here are the same two models with a Dixon 25mm, a Brigade Games 28mm and a large Copplestone laddie. I think the 25mm Dixon zouave works fine. in 1/64 scale a man is 27mm high approx so not surprising

3 of the many Lledo body styles. They also come with solid wheels. All Lledo wheels are the same size. I have decided that the main problem with Lledo is that the wheels are too small.

Lledo and Matchbox compared. I am guessing Lledo is scaled at about 1/58, or would be if the wheels were slightly bigger

Being in the middle, to my mind the Lledo seems to work OK with all our example figures...

another Lledo

Carrying on from the last post...

An Oxford Diecast. These come in 3 body styles which are unfortunately all vans, no basic car, but immensely useful all the same. I reckon these to be about 1/50.
here are our 3 regular chaps with a Redoubt figure as well.

Here is one that I didn't put in the line up, a Corgi Motoring Dreams Model T truck. I think this must represent a quite late model, with solid wheels .

The Oxford Diecast compared to the Y-01 Models of Yesteryear basic Model T.

The MOY model T is reckoned to be about 1/42, according to one article I found. The Dixon Zouave is starting to look a tad small. The others work OK I feel. For the first time I dare to put in a really BIG miniature, a Chiltern Victorian lady, she stands about 34mm

Another Matchbox, the later series MOY model T truck. This is reputed to be 1/35!!
I personally wouldn't use this alongside any of my minis. And the wheels are just wrong, even for a vehicle that has been modernised in the 30's

The Corgi Classics. A nice Diecast model, but if anything it only works with the very largest minis. I have the same body style in the Oxford diecast range

Just to finish up, the very biggest miniature with the very smallest car: In my opinion they don't work together.

Thanks! That is very helpful. I also have some of the "Cars" model Ts, which are on the smaller end.

a few shots with a ruler. Fram Framson mentioned that a 1/56 model T should measure approx. 62mm x 31mm: But even the smallest diecast in my collection, which I am pretty sure is 1/64, is bigger than that. So I am a bit confused.

Lledo

Oxford Diecast

A beat up Matchbox Models Of Yesteryear, 1/42 or thereabouts

Kenneth Koala says: "What the fuck! That really surprised me. I would use Oxford Diecast or Lledo with my 28s, but I would do something about those Lledo wheels!"

Amazing and detailed! Wow! Many thanks! Really does seem like the Lledo might actually be alright with proper, larger wheels - if you look at images of real Model T's the radiator grille should easily fit within the circle of one wheel, whereas with the Lledo care the opposite is almost true. Here's an excellent reference image I found for sizing:

Note the hood is about chest height (or the line between the chest and belly) and the windscreen is juuuust above head height.

As for the length I gave you, that was from the wiki, but might be for the runabout version. The width is probably the better size to judge them by.

I upgraded some of my Lledo cars with wheels from junked Matchbox "models of yesteryear". The new wheels are 18-19mm in diameter compared to the standard 14mm diameter of all the Lledo wheels.  The conversion means placing the axle 2mm further away from the vehicle, but the wheel still fits the wheel arch.   First results are good.

Here are a few shots of the first one I did with an unmodified Lledo:

I then did another model T and a Peugot:

The Lledo cars now compare favourably with the Oxford Diecast models, and can be used side by side IMO

A couple of shots with a 28mm miniature.

Feedback and opinions welcome!

I do try to take a suitable miniature with me to the various toy-fairs I attend in the UK. Comes in handy when you spot a vehicle, house or vehicle so you can do a "By eye comparison"

Though I still make mistakes.

Nice collection though. Got the angles covered there.  :)

That wheel upgrade makes a world of difference. Ive looked at the Ledos myself (cars from my childhood collection which may get repurposed for my adult collection) and thought they just seemed a little small, that wheel mod is spot on!

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers
Matt
