Given the normal timeframe of pulp games, this got me interested in the history of Hazmat suits. Surprisingly, it's very difficult to find anything at all prior to 1980! The wiki page for example has no history listed at all.

I found a very old geocities page (!) which had some photos (now sadly gone), but the photo captions do provide some information even though the actual images are lost:

Quote
1) Hazmat Workers dressed in old style rubbersuits is digging up old, rusty drums with a hazardous chemical.
The suit isn't gas tight, and the only sleeve sealing is an elastic band in the wrist, which is pulled over the rubber- glove. Suits like this isn't used much anymore, most because of the missing gas tightness.

2) A member of the hazmat team is putting on his full face mask, an old-type mask with 2 'gasmask eyes', which make the mask a kind of scary. The regulator is placed on the air-tanks and a low-pressure hose is connecting the mask with the regulator.

3) The Hazmat team in action, dressed in the type of suit describe above.

4) An early time Hazmat suit, manufactured by MSA in the 1940's. The suit is entered from the front, and is closed by a waterproof zipper. An APR type respirator was standard at that time.

I can also recall that hazmat suits specifically to protect against radiation were present in the Tintin moon stories written in the 50's, so they were at least part of public consciousness by then, even if they weren't yet common in hospitals or with first responders.

Wish I could find more!

Pretty sure I've seen some early Hazmat suits in old 1950's sci-fi movies, although I can't remember any specific movie titles.

Considering you can't see their faces, those wee guys have a lot of character! 8) I don't know why they remind me of the Hazmat guys from Monsters Inc.!

I think the old style of hazmat suits look so much more full of character than present day suits
