Bolt Action hill size????
« on: December 19, 2016, 01:01:33 AM »
I just started playing Bolt Action and was wondering what is the best size for basic hills to be? I would prefer some to be a bit larger (a more realistic size)than the ones that you would see on a 40k table. So gentlemen, what are your opinions on this?
  Thanks!

Big as you like. Or small as you like.

As long or as short as a piece of string comparatively speaking.

Well, in all honesty what did you expect? Same as in 40k hills in Bolt Action (as in most other platoon sized games I'm aware of) don't offer any tactical advantages besides blocking line of sight. So it's completely up to you how you set up your table. I for one use a felt gaming mat (excellent to create nicely rolling hill btw.) and prefer nice looking terrain to functional one. So on my tables you'll find hills of different sizes and shapes. But as always each to his/ her own.

No smaller than 5 figures frontage (a small team or section). As large as you like, but anything that can hide 10 figures can hide two or more tanks, so would be 'big enough'

I've played on flat tables, rolling hills and one that was a moutain (two huge 6" hills across the middle) all provide a different experience.

We use coir matting random shapes under felt cloth.

Pease1 & Rich H:  Thanks for the replies, that does make some sense. I've been looking at topographical maps and other reference material to get a good idea of hill sizes etc.. I'm looking at making a couple about 16in X 16in at the largest with the height decided by a gentle enough angle for minis to stand on without tipping over. Again, thanks for the better answers!

Height wise: 2" is plenty as that will provide a LOS block without needing to be too steep.

TFL have a nice write up on hills:

Remember the Bolt Action ground scale is 'flexible'
