Lion Rampant v Dux Bellorum
« on: March 10, 2024, 11:44:58 PM »
I own and love Lion Rampant (as well as it’s offshoots), I don’t have Dux Bellorum though and being also by Daniel Mersey, I’m curious if I should give it a look.

I understand it’s Dark Ages versus LR’s more medieval era (though there are some DA mods for LR) rules, but does it play that differently? Is it its own system or an early, proto-version of LR?

If I like LR, should I stick with it for Dark Ages too or should I consider Dux Bellorum?

They use completely different game mechanics. Dux Bellorum is aimed at representing a full battle, with rectangular elements for units.

Agreed.  Dux Bellorum is a specific "Romano-British" period, more traditional, biggish-battle game rather than a "large skirmish". It is based on an earlier Dan Mersey ruleset called "Glutter of Ravens".

As the others have said, dux bellorum is aimed at simulating larger engagements than Lion Rampant, there’s not really going to be an overlap between them. Honestly, both of them are very good games in their own right, but if you’re only interested in skirmish gaming then you should stick with LR, it’ll work fine for dark ages.
