mounting skirmishers in pairs
« on: December 30, 2016, 12:32:54 AM »
I just wondered- does anybody mount their light infantry skirmishers in pairs on the same size base as a line infantry base with 4 figures on it? It strikes me that that would look good and make them very recognizable.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

2019 Painting Challenge :
figures bought: 500+
figures painted: 57
9 vehicles painted
4 terrain pieces scratchbuilt

I tend to make mine separated in either bases of 25mm round or 20mm square and then put on a irregular base of 2 from Warbases.
But i gess it depends on what rules will you guide.

Well I just bought Shako but haven't got them yet.
I feel that light infantry should look different. I see your solution is a good one for gaming but I personally am not keen on sabot bases. By the way after seeing your re-enactment uniform photos  Rui I am veering heavily towards taking your cazadores and Spanish!

They are available and separated for you. ;)
I still have a few bits and pieces.

About the bases you can always opt for putting the rank and file on unit bases and use the light infantry individually.
I dont know what type of bases Shako requires. I mostly play skirmish games with some 20 or 30 per side so i end up using individual bases.

Another solution and again if the rules require and you like you can use the same size of bases for all type of infantry and just put less figures on the light infantry to get the feeling of spread infantry.

I did for a while until I discovered 100mm oval bases that hold 3-4 figures.  After all skirmishers always operate in pairs - one firing & one loaded and ready
Clear the battlefield and let me see

Exactly! I felt basing in pairs would make their role on the battlefield really obvious and contrast with the line infantry in tight ranks. I am nowhere near painting any of my nappy figures yet but it's something I am kicking around.

Thanks Rui.  How many Portuguese do you have? Is it just the 3 cazadores and the 2 line infantry?
