Getting back to WWII
« on: January 03, 2017, 03:17:48 AM »
After a long sabbatical away from WWII I've decided to get back into my first, and favorite, wargaming period. I'm not exactly sure where to go as far as rules are concerned but I'll think about that as I go along. I started wargaming with the old Airfix Magazine Guide #15 WWII Wargaming rules and moved on from there. But I haven't played WWII for a long, long time.

There's more of my thoughts and a couple more pics on my blog @: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/wwii-my-introduction-to-wargaming.html
I'd be interested in any thoughts regarding rules etc.

Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

You can also consider Iron Cross and Bolt action. We play all three in our club (including the above mentioned chain of command)

While I only play straight WWII at squad level, I can heartily recommend both Operation Squad Evolution (available as a PDF via Wargames Vault & a book from Warlord Games) & Warwick Kinrade's Normandy Firefight. the former is a squad level game using 10-12 models a side (a rifle squad plus a light support weapon - there are vehicle rules, but anything bigger than a light armoured car or halftrack seeme a bit much - though the option is there for tanks) & plays in a fairly quick fashion (there's a youtube video of a basic game at; youtube.com/watch?v=z-RHozeoerU).
Normandy Firefight is a slightly different beast, being originally for 3-5 54mm figures (Warwick includes how to scale it for different sized models - 20 & 28mm) & while there's a greater level of detail than your average 28mm game, it's far from overwhelming & also produces a fast moving game (it's also a pleasingly slim & inexpensive volume that's well written - as you'd expect from the author of the Battlegroup books - I got mine from Northstar).
I'm suggesting these as it's nice to have the option of playing smaller, faster games occasionally, where the only investment is a rulebook as you'll already have the minis & scenery - hope this was of help!

(I'm planning to add Agis's Victory Decision Raid to the list, the VD range also provides pretty sound rules for larger games.)

When u see how good 20mm minis can look (like yours)  I wish I hadn't gone down the 28mm route.  It would have been cheaper for starters!

Personally we use Bolt Action.  It's not the most historically accurate game ever but it's good fun and has enabled me to snag a few 40k players into the historical fold.

A game I mean to check out is Combat HQ.  That looks great,  particularly for bigger actions.

I've been adding quite a bit of stuff to my WWII troops - British & German mainly. I did some Valiant Germans but I've decided to move away from Valiant due to the scale of them and go for more traditional 1/72-20mm. I have pretty easy access to AB figures and they mix well with Plastic Soldier Company.

Anyhow, here are some pics of my latest stuff - British heavy weapons (AB 20mm). Lots more on my blog. If you look around you'll find other stuff (Brit and German).

I'll second that. Great fun.
