Cory's Build - whatsit
« on: January 04, 2017, 05:11:49 PM »
After winnowing three projects that fit the theme and were on my winter to do list down to twelve I realized I had a serious gaming problem.

I went back and evaluated all of the ideas on the following basis
1) Will likely be used for gaming within 30 days of completion (out went the cloud board for a Ghost Riders in the Sky game)
2) Likely to be finished building by the deadline (out went starship table, space station table, and other complete table builds)
3) Requires materials I need to use outside (-10 F today, I don't think it will warm up enough over the next few weeks)
4) Met contest rules about 25% about 3d/laser cut/commercial materials (this eliminated several upcoming Infinity projects)

So I am going with a drop shuttle for my blaxsploitation inspired Rogue Stars crew, something funkadelic enough to appear on a 70's Saturday cartoon show. None of that boxy, clean lined, bilateral stuff, this one has to make the folks I game with groan at the sight of. And have a rainbow painted on it. And a flower. Think ginormous VW microbus to the stars.

Finally found some free time that wasn't taken up shoveling snow or doing other folks chores.

Anyway I got started on the concept - I am planning on three rooms - cockpit/bridge, lounge/mess, and cargo bay - that will be accessible for play. The body of the craft will be built around them. Tonight I was able to get started mocking up the starter cockpit. I heavily scratched the plastic spoon I am using for the canopy so I'll probably redo that.

Funkadelic .... there's a word you don't hear often enough  :)

Is there any way you could leave the canopy until last - you are bound to end up scratching it again before you are finished, plus you'll want to paint the rest of the model?

So, having thought I would have January off we have been hit by our worst winter, cold and snow, in 31 years. This project languished while I either didn't have time or was too tired (ever try digging 200 bison out of a snow drift?), but with the deadline looming I spent last night plunging ahead.

The canopy and visible cockpit had to be ditched, there just isn't time to do an interior.

The core of the ship was made with a Styrofoam half sphere and the rest so far with craft foam.

I began covering the Styrofoam with craft foam panels. I had no templates and some of the cuts aren't quite right, but it'll work. I found simply worrying the craft foam was a better way to form it into a curve than heat but it still needed help to get it to stay. The solution I came up with was nails pressed into the underlying Styrofoam.

The two front legs are stolen from a plastic MechWarrior mech. To keep them from breaking off during storage they will attach with magnets to bolts inserted into the ship.

The beginnings of the ship engines. They are cheap kazoos attached to washers. They too will be held on magnetically and attached to some Reaper bases with magnets glues to the side of the ship.

And slowly it begins to take shape. The rear still needs finished, a few more front panels need to be added and then detailing can be thought about.

The damage from trying to use the heat gun to shape the foam is visible as a warping of the sides. Serendipitously this actually adds to the beat up character I was looking for.

Progress - and yes, the warped panel will make it look unique.

That describes it really well.
I really like the design, it is good to see something that is not so 'sleek' as some of the others.
It will certainly have character.
