McMordain's spaceship
« on: January 03, 2017, 01:44:49 PM »
One of my projects for 2017 is making scenery for sci-fi skirmish games. The setting will be something like Firefly/Dark Matter/SW Outer Rim. So I need a space ship (or more) and that's what I will build. In 28mm.

After getting a stock of the available material I have, it seems I will build one of the Pringles Engineering Corporations light transport. :D
Probably modified extensively by the merc crew currently using it.

Here is a very basic sketch of what I want to build. The main body will be two Pringles tube pimped up with various things.
As I'm waiting to some basic supplies to arrive (styrene sheets and the like) I will make some templates for the side hulls, and search for something that I can use for the nose and tail sections. An I need to find a good sized plastic plate for the top as well.

Put together the basic shape of the ship, and made a paper mock-up for the side extension to see how it will look. I'm still waiting for my building materials to arrive, the pack should be here early next week. Till then I started to take measurements and make templates for the extra stuff I want to build on it.
I have enough stuff to start working on the landing gear, so that will be next.

Interesting project.  8).

Good use of materials. Are they paper cups on the nose(s)?

Thanks, though it doesn't look like much at the moment.
I can't wait to really start to work on it.

No they are plastic. I have a bunch of these cinema figure cups.

Its bottom cut off fits almost exactly into the bottom of a pringles tube. I cut the lid to fit the top of the tube.
I changed the design around, so the cup bottoms will be the engines. The red toppers will be the front end. I didn't liked the cockpit, so I redesigned it. I will show you what I have in mind after I get the stuff I ordered.

After looking at a lot of landing gears I think I will use this as a base for my ship: Front Landing Gear Animation

After spending the whole day sketching possible landing gear constructions I finally got one I liked.
Then I spent four hours to make a prototype changing the design several times.
In the end I got this.

I was very happy with myself, until I realized the hydraulic cylinders have no purpose if the central pillar can't move...  o_o
I'm too tired to start over now. Tomorrow I will search for a big enough ball (well I will need 4) to make a ball joint for the central pillar as well. And if I can't find any, I will replace the hydraulic cylinders with simple rods.

If the upper ring to which the hydraulic jacks can slide (in the real thing, not the model!) over the cylinder around which it's fitted it would work.
Very nicely done  8) 8) 8)

Thanks. And good point about the hydraulic jacks. I think I can modify the design (yet again  ;D) to incorporate it. I would still like to have the ball joint. I will see what can I do, when I get home today.
