:D

It is though.

At least to us(the general public) anyway! :-*

The landing gear is brilliant.

Finished the landing gears yesterday. I only have to cut lids for the houses, but I want to paint the insides first.

With these done, I started to work on the engines. I couldn't find enough of the same bits I wanted to use for heatsinks around the engine house so I made a master and copied it with instamould.

Not the best solution, but it works. They will look ok painted I hope.

Starboard engine is about halfway done, nothing is glued yet.

Made the main engine on the port side as well.

I put together some parts of the ship, to get a feel for a general look and run into a little problem.

This is the original plan for the ship, with an upper structure, central cockpit and a top turret.

And this is the ship without all that upper stuff. And I like the look of it. A lot. But I also like the original. I probably have a better chance to finish the build without the upper structure, but I don't want to make it that way only because of that. So what do you guys think?

Looking good. The top (original) version looks a little top heavy now. Possible to cut back what you build on top?

I like the idea of the top turret.  However I agree with Matt. The sheer bulk of your mock up detracts from all your hard work . I'd be inclined to include the superstructure with the dome but only have the card structure stand around 6-8mm above the engine body .I think that would be enough to suggest a superstructure without compromising the lines of engine body which works so well.(plus its only a quick cut down of the formers you've already made,so it won't eat time and you'd get to keep the turret.)

(Just a musing ,since I generally just make it up as I go along, and since I've not made a single sketch for my own entry. Which now requires parts to be measured with a tape not a ruler ,You might want to wait for the opinion of someone who owns both a pencil and paper)

Mark.

I prefer the one without the top deck so therefore you should build it without it ;). However if you plan the build correctly now you can add the top deck as an add-on later. Just incorporate some metal plates now as detailing on the roof. Build the top deck/upper structure later with some rare earth magnets and presto you have two ships for the price of one. Add some details that can act as alignment point and the turret can be removable so can be placed on either version of the ship.

Like the heat sink design.

Interesting, that bit on the heat sinks.  8) 8) 8)
I'd suggest you finish the ship in the easiest way possible given the time frame - or better still, whichever looks best to you. I'd go for the cleaner one.

I join the applause on the heat sink design - a lovely little detail that looks so 'right'  8) :-*

Regarding the design/build conundrum, my preference is for the sleeker lines without the top section. If you are wedded to both then the suggestion to use magnets for later additions is a really good one: detachable survival or habitation unit, etc? Or rather than a drop ship, a top ship that can detach for planetary exploration. Etc etc etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
While I like the idea of a modular ship with magnetized parts I don't think I have the time to properly plan it. But I will definitely explore this idea for the next ship.
After reading the comments and thinking about it, I decided on something like this:

I moved the cockpit back and the turret forward. Also halved the height of the upper structure and constrained it to the size of the cockpit. I will narrow it as well and it will have a slight slop going forward to the turret.

I need something for topping the forward part. I think either a big enough half sphere or something conical would do.

If you can find some, I'd use the pointed end of plastic Easter eggs. Then fill/cover the space between to match the taper of the egg.

Interesting design, looking forward to seeing it all tied together.

Engines done, I started the cockpit.

The IG sentinel pilot was used for scale reference.

The ship controls will be on the armrests. The grey circle will be the entry point into the cockpit.

Unfortunately it seems I will not have much free time after Monday. And I'm not entirely free this weekend either...  :(
So just like some of the other contestants, I don't want to rush finishing it and I probably will not be done on time.
