I'm still liking it enought that I've stored away the idea to build one myself later. And it will look a lot better to you painted, you'll see :)

(Hell - I built something completely useless, for a project I haven't finished any dedicated miniatures for yet!)

After seeing the great stuff some of the others have built, I'm slightly embarrassed to continue with my rather half-assed attempt, but I'll try to finish anyway.

I've added strips of cardstock over the leafcatcher bit (no in progress pictures), just picture some tapered oval shapes and you'll get the idea.

The balloon will need a cap

And something to mask the bottom where the strips meet and smooth the transition to the central shaft

The 'finished' build

The paper strips could fit (quite a lot) better (less 'gap' showing) but I won't redo them. I really have no need for a balloon, and still have a lot of figures to finish so I rather spend my time painting those or building stuff that might have a chance of being used.

I will try to paint and base the balloon, just to have a finished entry. My idea was better than the execution, but I'm convinced that with spending a bit of more time someone more experienced/talented could really make an excellent balloon this way.

Time spent
Gathering materials and supplies: 25 min
Plans/mock-ups: 10 min
Building: 3 h 45 min
Pictures/LAF post: 45 min

Your project was a lot faster than mine. My own Hammerhead Shark has taken ages (mind you I have been working on 'other' projects alongside it.

Looking good and I agree - that leaf catcher was inspirational.

that leaf catcher was inspirational.

I agree - has me thinking of ways I could use one in future.

Well, the damn thing doesn't seem to hold paint properly  >:(

I think the neoprene glue I've used must have bled through a bit at the edges or through the paper and doesn't like my airbrush paint. After a primer and two coats of base color it's still splotchy.

I guess I'll have to throw in the towel as well - another DNF I'm afraid.

Bummer about the paint adhesion. I recently painted a dozen little resin vehicles, airbushed gradient windows, the whole nine yards... paint started flaking off shortly after. The pain is reall...

Interesting project though- you might try a 'self-etching' primer, and/or a light sanding of the surface to give it some 'tooth' for the primer/paint.
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.
