Hearts' 10mm English Civil War Project
« on: January 04, 2017, 06:20:18 PM »
Hey everyone,

After getting back from Fall-In I started a new project. A few of the guys in our group were working on Pike and Shotte stuff in 28mm but I wasn't totally thrilled with how large the unit footprints were. After looking around for a bit I settled on 10mm. I wanted to wait until I had a playable amount done before I started posting about it.

I started by putting together two 300 pt armies to test some games out. All this stuff still needs basing done but I'm still experimenting with that.

First up is the infantry

The first Royalist unit I did was the King's Lifeguard. The bases are 40mm squares

The first unit for the Parliament forces was Skippon's Regiment

Next up are the Cavalry. I did 4 units in total. 2 units of Cuirassier for Parliament and 2 units of regular Cav for the Royalists. The Cuirassier are identical except for the flag as are the two cavalry units.

So first are the London Lobsters

And then Lord Byron's Horse

I'm still working on the various battalia commands but I did finish Pendraken's Prince Rupert Figure as well as a generic commander.

Finally I did a tumbrel cart from Pendraken and a Medium Gun from Old Glory

I'm hoping to get in a test game at 300 pts some time soon and there's some terrain on the workbench right now. The eventual end goal is to recreate the Siege of Worchester that's in the rulebook.

Very nice painting of the figures. And you are right to go with 10mm to get big armies quickly.

A couple of comments / questions

With the OG strips, I might have gone with 30mm bases to minimise the dead ground halo around the troops - particularly between the pike and Shotte.

With the cavalry, I'd try to get 1 or 2 more figures on the base, with just 3 they look a bit like light cavalry, rather than a mass of heavy cavalry.

That looks fantastic.  I've got a Pendraken royalist army sat in their bags I was contemplating selling but you've just reminded me why I got them in the first place.

Thanks everyone.

In regards to the base sizes. A big motivation was that I had tons of this size already. I'm not a huge fan of all the dead space either but I figured it was fine for the sake of uniformity. Another guy in our group just ordered some scots from Pendraken so I figured 40's would be pretty easy to work with. The artillery and tumbrel is on a 40x45 which are in what seems like every box of 28mm plastics these days, so again I have a ton lying around.

The reasoning behind the fewer figures on the bases for the Cavalry was purely so less needed to be painted over all. I might go back later once I get some games in and add some figures, which is part of the reason I didnt put any ground work at all on the Cav. I have so many extra cuirassier because of the pack sizes so I definetly have enough to spare.

In the mean time I finished up the first terrain piece. A building from Old Glory.

The highlights didnt show up quite as well in the picture as they do in person but I'm pretty happy with it. I went with a super basic paint job but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I normally hate painting terrain but the smaller size of this stuff made it pretty enjoyable

The 40x40mm base size is a good size, lots of my 10mm stuff is now going on that size of base. It seems to allow a decent number of troops, but enough space for some different 'formations' of the figures.

The OG strips look good, with the troops close together, I've got some sitting in a box, so this might tempt me to paint some, though I'm currently painting the Pendraken LoA figures for 30 years later.

Good idea with keeping the figure density down to enable playable units more quickly!

The house has come out well, 10mm terrain does paint up nice and fast, and looks good too.

I've got a Pendraken royalist army sat in their bags I was contemplating selling but you've just reminded me why I got them in the first place.

Go on, you know you want to see them on the table!

Lovely work, I have been looking at the OG range myself, you have done a lovely job on them. :) Looking forward to seeing how this carries on.

Have you gotten in any games yet? How did the Pike & Shotte rules work in 10mm?

I was going to suggest this. It looks like you have less flexibility with the strips of infantry, but with the single cavalry models, adding one would really fill out the base.
