The Heart of the Aeronef Fleet (updated 3-10-09)

I can't help myself. I think I will name this one "The Hammer of Thor". You all started talking about big ships, and I had this carrier idea. So, her we go. Last night's beginning...

And now, tonight's word before I ran out of planks. Quick trip to Michael's tomorrow necessary.

You can see the start of the Steam engines, the superstructure with the same piece as the first, smaller Aeronef. I have not decided what the forces of Free Norway will do for Aethernauts on the carrier, but I'll think of something.

OMG thats HUGE LOL  its going to look awesome.

We really should all get together and post pictures with our ships specs when they are all done.

Cant wait to reveal my second and third ships for my Japanese, but I fear they could like insignificant compared to this behemoth.

Integrity is non negotiable

Well, statistically speaking, the Japanese do have smaller equipment.  lol

Where do you live, by the way? If I get my Norwegians done...

That is massive. I'd like to know the weight of that when you're done! Well done!

Will you be using a real magnum of champagne to christen it? I want pictures of that.

Oh and by the way you're on my side aren't you? (remember its 1903, the Cod wars havn't happened yet)

My wife says she would be more than happy to vacation to Australia as an excuse to play VSF. I love this woman.

Mjollnir is looking good so far.
For attack craft you could try something truly exotic - how about giant dragonflies ?
Either genetically modified by a crazed Scandinavian scientist, or bred from captive specimens brought back from Venus.
In terms of size, something about the size of a real dragonfly (perhaps a local "educational" toyshop might be a source or natural history museum gift shop) should be about big enough to mount a rider and carry a bomb or torpedo, though not over long distances.

Sadly lads, although looking good so far it isn't huge yet : 20 years ago we played a lot of "Full Thrust" SF games at the club, and went through a Star Wars season. Quite a few ERTL/Airfix star destroyers came out (each about 12 inches long), needless to say, one of the club decided to raise the stakes (he was an art student so did it as part of his degree work) and built a super star destroyer that was awesomely large. Engines were based on Pringles tubes, six of them, widest beam was about 3 feet, length was just over seven feet, the hull was 6 - 15 inches thick. When he unveiled it as a surprise one club night it took three of us to carry it in to the gaming room. Some people thought it was a surfboard.

He made it so that it could be mounted on a wall mount (one inch metal tube slotted in through a central hole in the stern).
Gary, Glynis, and Alasdair (there are three of us, but we are too mean to have more than one login)

That is awesome. I did something sorta like that when I was 8 - I built a scale-ish star destroyer for my action figures that took up most of one wall of my bedroom - all cardboard, tape, old food containers. There are pictures of it in my parents collection somewhere. I was an ambitious youth.

This one is only about 32" long - I scaled back from original design, because I still have to be able to store it.

I am trying to find a suitably VSF version of wings - rocket packs are too WW2 - and call them Valkyries. Maybe even use female figures...I have considered the Vanir valkyries from Celtos, but they are too medieval, even if they are gorgeous.

Well, if anyone is paying attention, here is the latest update.

Got the planking on, and attached the stands. Now, I just need to decide on a few things and move on.

The back has not changed much yet, but I will have to redo the smokstack. The bottles I was stacking wont glue together, so I am going to cut a hole out of the one glued on now, and use pvc piping.

And here is a comparison shot, so that you can see how much larger she is then the original.

Looking great. For winged troops, how about basing off GW Birdmen of Catrazza?
http://www.grafika.cytadela.pl/articles/718r.jpg

I believe they've been dropped now, but they turn up on ebay periodically.

The plastic thing on the back, the silver and yellow one. What is it from? Looks very familiar for some reason.
So many projects..... so little time.......

Good god, man...! Are you over-achieving, or what?!

I believe I got it in an X-men Heroclix box, along with a broken robot, for Danger Room simulations.

Probably. Some of us just cannot resist new projects. Once I get a little more work done, she will probably be set aside like the other one, so that I can concentrate on my Pirates, until I can afford to toss an order in to Reviresco for appropriate guns and some of their infinitely neato doors and such. I can't get those at the local hobby store - and the rest of their fixtures tend to be in brass, and that is a bit spendy for my current budget. I figure once I have the carrier, and it's escort, crewed, then I can calm down on my VSF kick, get my Pirate Empire army finished for a Tournament this summer. and then move on to painting my Warmachine Pirates, and any number of other looming projects on my wall of doom.

May I suggest [wiki]Mjolnir[/wiki]or Mjölnir since that is what the hammer is really called? Norse names are quite common on Swedish warships. I served on a Norwegian made patrol boat called 'Vidar'. The others three in the division were called Hugin, Munin (after the ravens of Odin) and Vale.

if you are considering a sistership ;) Gungnir is a good name. It is the spear of Odin the Allfather, which never misses its target.
