Wild West Paper terrain
« on: January 10, 2017, 05:24:38 PM »
If you are like me- you cant lay down $300+ for a western town and you lack skills to make your own from popsicle sticks. So you look at paper terrain.

I have White Wash city by Eric Hotz and Rio Draco by Fat Dragon games.   While i like Whitewash City for the variety, detail and huge number of buildings- the scale is just too small.  Yeah, i know you can resize it, but that only works to a point and its alot of trouble, as more then one piece is on each page. Its the way its set up. Nothing against Whitewash, it just doesnt work for what I want.

I would recommend Rio Draco. There are far less types of buildings, but they are sized better. There are also layers- add/remove signs, bars on windows, paint- new/weathered, bullets holes, etc.  So you can use the same basic building several times.
Id use 110 lb card stock and maybe even glue it to another sheet of card stock so its twice as thick, before cutting/assembly.  If i get ambitious I'll post some pics.

==========

On another note- I just watched In a Valley of Violence. Its a kind of humorous spoof on westerns. I liked it.

There's also the Deadwood range by World Works Games... if you can still find it :)

Its still there- but from what Ive seen its all wood. No color or paint really. Too much the same.

Deadfall- tumbleweed pass.

Thought the Deadwood series was awesome too.  :)

I would be keen to see pics comparing Rio Draco to White Wash City. I agree paper is the way to go for speed and cheapness and can look as good or better in some cases.

I'll see what  can do. Whitewash is noticeably smaller. Much so. Especially with the larger 28mm figures .

I really like stoezel's structures frontier town. designed to use foam board to back with cutout areas printed on the model.  Ithe set comes with several different buildings, signs and props.  interiors are included.

I've only ever tried (and failed) to put one Stoetzl structure together, although I've put together plenty of card/ paper terrain in the past. They are specifically designed to go on foamcore and that's what I couldn't get on with  :(.

These days I am using 99% MDF buildings and happy with that.

Scale is 28-32mm. They are designed to be used with foam-board, but I have no problem with that. Whilst I have made a fair few Stoelzel's buildings none of them were from his Wild West set. For what it's worth I like his buildings far better than those by Fat Dragon Games (no interiors) and World Work Games (their TLX buildings are far too fiddly to make, even for an expert like myself).

First post! Just started putting together some papercraft terrain so I figured I'd post a comparison stoelzel's fatal frontier, fat dragons Rio Draco, Eric hotz white wash city, world works games deadfall, and lucky Luke's that I found in my search for western buildings. White wash city wash scaled up 10%.

Toman this is great - thanks, is it possible to show a figure for scale as well as the buildings, also vampifan mentioned that some have interiors, can you tell us which of these does.
Cheers

looks wonderful... I wouldnt think it is paper made terain..  :o the colours look so natural. All of them fit together... [perhaps with the exception of the Church. It looks very natural but a little depressing  perhaps this Cross should be reduced-but of course this is a matter of taste]. The buildings fit together very well
