Looking for the ultimate daylight painting lamp!
« on: January 13, 2017, 08:02:33 AM »
I've been struggling for years with a particularly ad-hoc solution for lighting my painting table and I've had enough.
Sitting near a window is obviously good advice, but when I paint it's often dark, and the light is inconsistent anyway (and sitting near windows is too hot in the summer here too).

Does anyone have any advice or links for the best tabletop craft lights? I want one with a long bulb/head that casts a bright and even light over a fairly wide area. I have a magnifying lamp and a smaller daylight lamp to eliminate shadows, but need a biggie to provide strong general daylight illumination.

Any ideas?

Two suggestions - both are LED.

I have a small desk lamp with a flexible arm and a flat head containing 34 LED's - I paint with the lamp over the figure and it is fine. I bought a bright white rather than warm light LED output and this gives nearer to 'daylight light' which I think is around 5200 Kelvin. Cost to me £25

Secondly - perhaps overkill, an LED camera spotlight system. It has a surface area bigger than an iPad, with illuminate a whole table or workspace, has controllable brightness and colour temperature from warm to bright. You would need a light stand and also make sure that what you buy includes a mains adaptor - these things will run off batteries, but you really need the consistency of mains. I got it to do video of my wargames table. My model is the NangGuang Luxpad43. Cost to me including stand and mains adapter £195

There was also a hemi-spherical "photo" LED lamp for a desk I saw recently (basically a strip of LED bulbs arcing over your work area).  No idea who made it or where...

The s faithful "triple bright" best light going. I'm thinking of kitting my workshop out with all round bright daylight bulbs but for now (and then I imagine) this sits above my head 7 hours a day.

I have had an earlier version of this for the last 10 years or so...

...and it's absolutely brilliant. Unhesitatingly recommended.

I find a daylight bulb (available from art shops) in an anglepoise light works just fine.

Ahem, the Arc of Light.
There are many examples out there. No one set of parts. A part to make the arc, a way to a fix to your table. LEDs to go on the arc for light and a power source. Measurements are up to you consisting of the base and height of said arc.
