Song of <insert here> - what's your favourite?
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:29:34 PM »
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

Some of you may be aware that I've recently discovered and have been playing Song Of Blades And Heroes.  I have been looking a some of the other incarnations, and I've been wondering what others like and dislike about them?

I would like to try Song of Arthur and Merlin (as an excuse to buy and paint up some crusader miniatures), and I was wondering if the game has a dark age "feel" to it, or is it just like playing SBH with different models?  And while I'm asking questions, What "factions" are present in the list?  I am leaning towards Irish or Normans, but I wasn't sure if Normans would be included.

Thanks,
JET

My favourite is Flying Lead (the generic 'shooty' modern set) - oops not out yet :-)
Seriously though they are all good games - I love SOBH and play the Naps version regularly. Least favorite is the post apoc one Mutants and Death Ray Guns but only as it is not a genre we tend to play.
Fear & Faith will quickly become a favourite at our club when it is out (I have been playtesting it) due to the zombie, vampire and werewolf possibilities.

The Arthur book (which is a supplement not a stand alone set) is superb for that genre and has a real 'feel' which is different from SOBH due to the special rules. Lists are supplied so you can play in the high fantasy (hollywood) genre, the gritty fantasy of Merlin ala the Cornwell models or welsh king genre or the 'realistic post Romano Britain world.

We tend to play the Hollywood version and it inspired me to spend a fortune on the Thunderbolt Mountain true 25 figures!!!!

I've only got SBH, SGD and SWW so far, but my next purchase will be SAM.

I like the first two expansions very much, as it just extends an already great ruleset even more.  But, then I am a fan already :)

Let us know what you think, if you get SAM before I do, Jet! :)
