Who makes Elizabethan warships?
« on: February 04, 2017, 02:23:16 PM »
As the topic says, who makes warships suitable for the Spanish Main and all things Drake/Frobisher/Howard and so forth?

Valient Enterprises I've managed to find the site for, they're in the US - anyone over here in the UK? Not sure what scale I'm after yet so any suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Rob

Peter Dennis is soon to release his cardboard Armada Book

1/600th range here:

http://www.skytrex.com/61-triton-1600th-scale-ships

I made  a lot of these 30 years ago and the quality struck me as excellent.

The Armada book should indeed be on its way very soon, I proofread it about 2-3 weeks ago (along with the Romans book). It looks very nice, most ships will be about 2-3" long though, of course, you could print them off much larger if that is your want.

Thanks all, definitely some options there. Still not sure what sclae I want to go for, never before have I forayed into naval wargaming so it may be a case of getting a few samples.

Those Skytrex do look nice, shame it's not a larger range - though I though Skytrex went out of business?

At the risk of shamelessly promoting the paper ships from Helion and Peter Dennis...they do offer the option of trying out the period relatively cheaply. You can then always move on to metal later  :)

I am looking forward to the Peter Dennis book too. Hopefully there will be Galleases and galleys in there as well as the Sail.

We have been using the Skull and Crown galleys and jolly nice they look too, but alas no merchant or sailing warships amongst them yet for a variation in scenarios.

One of the best things in the Dennis books so far has been the card scenery, quick and inexpensive tables for new scenarios.  I rather hope that there are port facilities in the armada book to enable singeing of the King os Spain's Beard in Cadiz.

In the event that you are looking not at fleet actions but ship on ship action you may wish to look ar Zvezda's 1/350 snap together kit range. They do a Golden Hinde, Revenge and a Spanish  'San Martin' galleon. They can be built as waterline models.

Not at all, it's all of interest  :D

Personally I was planning on getting Galleys and Galleons, which are the development from Irregular Wars - All at Sea. Lots of examples on the Irregular Wars blog.

Being swayed towards the Peter Dennis book. Might wait for a review first (there's just something about card models I haven't quite 'got' yet, but I could be convinced)
