Action at Kaushut (Transcaspian 1918)
« on: March 03, 2017, 08:35:07 AM »
Next day at Kaushut, north-east of Mekhinli...

Retreating reds hastily fortified small turkmenian village near Kaushut station, also sending for reinforcements, which came in the form of 2 sailor companies and Austin AC.

Meanwhile, surviving sepoys advanced towards bolshevik's positions supported by flank attack of numerous but unenthusiastic whites. Attackers had double advantage in artillery, but their ammo was limited to 3-4 salvoes per battery, while reds made an ammo depot in the center of the village (they had rerolls, but with the risk of possible detonations...).

Allied artillery opens fire, tearing gaps in red barricades, causing panic among the defenders (despite surprisingly low casualities).

Reds fire back form all available weaponry. Smart whites hit the dirt and stopped their advance, shooting back, but the indian onslaught was nearly unstoppable. Also, red infantry cover saves were abyssimal - soon 2/3 of defenders were dead or wounded.

Reds quickly changed plans by sending only Austin into indian flank - sailors ran into the village as quick as possible. Armored car made some success in destroying indian HMG and a number of sepoys, but was hit by the indian 18-pdr and decided to hide behind a hill.

Damn! Indians attacked through the fortifications, killing all red infantry! Shootout with sailors started in the street and suddenly some stray bullet causes the explosion of ammo depot!!!!!!!!!

Red commander, half of artillerymen and assaulting sepoys were obliterated by the blast! Remnants of red battery fought to the death, sending last canister into the face of the attackers!

Final episode of the drama - whites run to the barricades, but their overcaution played bad joke - they fail to reach objective in time. Half of the sailors was demoralised by incoming fire, but the rest take the positions back. British colonel takes sikh company under personal command and leads a bayonet charge against the sailors... but the sailors resist hard. Sudden bullet hits brave colonel in the head, and he falls to the ground incapacitated!!!
Allies fail to capture the burning ruins of the village - red resistance barely holds!

Heavy losses, suffered by indians and reds (and insufficient white losses) made this game a draw with a close edge to the allies. But undecisive actions of whites prevented them from winning a game.

Colonel could easily escape harm, if his subbordinates were staying closer to the front  lol

Nearest british captain was hiding from AC fire behind the house corner and it would took him 2 or more turns to reach sikhs and lead a charge. So force commander decided to "better do it himself" with tragic result.
