Building KLS Walkure : action pictures on page 3!!!
« on: February 23, 2017, 02:29:28 PM »
Despite the fact that I bailed out of the building contest because I had been building airships all year, after running the Skyships of Barsoom demo the itch returned and I felt quite disturbed by the fact that the Germans were so far unrepresented on my gaming table. So the building of KLS (Kaiserliches LuftSchiff) Walkure began.

So far the sketches, zeppelin tubes and sawing molds have been made.

Have you seen Crossover Miniatures Frederik?

Frederik Class Airship

Similar enough that I was wondering: homage, unconscious remembrance, or convergent evolution?

In Crossover's case, I prefer the version he did without the gasbags. So far, yours seems more 'organic'.

I am intrigued by the second layout; I think I have a toy with that rounded-sides going on. Oh, merde, another expedition to the basement, I fear...

Really looking forward to more reports!

Yours build ,was one of the builds I was looking forward to seeing, during the competition. So its good to see your back on your tools .(so to speak)

Its also nice to see you've opted to build a class other than the over played Aphid's.
Or some over bulked off the shelf derivative.
So I for one, will be watch for your progress, with interest.

Mark.

Thank you.

I aimed for a zeppelin based German ship because Space 1889 canon denies them liftwood. But I wanted to stay away from traditional airship design and yet again stay close enough to make it recognisable. So there had to be zeppelin tubes and engines in separate gondolas outside the hull. But because VSF always looks insanely impractical the hull would be on top of the zeppelins instead of underneath. I added the ram because it simply looks early Victorian and makes no sense at all.

Obviously someone else already thought of that. The similarities are coincidental I think. But to be honest, one can never be sure.....

As I suggested. However, a homage would have been understandable, and I DID say I preferred what I was seeing so far.  ;)

I THINK the toy I was remembering was the Pirate of Dark Waters 'Wraith', later reused as the Mortal Combat 'Dragon Wing.'

Bow on, the outriders stand out better.

I can see that turn into something Barsoomian  :)

I like the design. It reads as a logical progression with in the context of 1889.Rather than an oversized Aphid with extra firepower. That most people opt for.

To be honest I already built an Aphid (actually two...) to try out some building ideas.  lol

Extrapolating from Space 1889 canon the Germans arrived on Mars after the British and therefore their aeronefs should in my eyes appear as an answer to British designs without making use of liftwood.

So, apart from being lifted by zeppelin gasbags, Walkure will be better armoured and sport Germanesque weaponry (Maxim machineguns instead of Nordenfelds) and will have an armoured ram bow copied from indigenous Martian designs.

I am contemplating arming her better as well, but that would create a problem with game balance and ignore the fact that gasbags should not have better lifting capabilities than liftwood. And that would seem the case if two gasbags could lift better armour as well as heavier guns without paying any price.

So she will either get about the same armament as an Aphid or be classified in my homebrewn rules as a Heavy ship, which will make her slower in speed and climb rates.

Using the templates to draw the main parts on MDF an hour of sawwork leaves you with a pile of wooden parts:

Since I am always curious how it all looks and can never wait I piled all the pieces on top of each other and took a quick picture before it collapsed again. It starts to look like the intended design  :)

Excellent!

While handwavium can explain the bag-to-ship size disparity, and one reason I like your version is that disparity is less, another option that the Germans had in Space 1889 were lift rotors.

I do assume the 'wings' are trim tabs, but you might think of adding a few upward props.

If not, perhaps the germ of an idea for later beasts.  :D

I considered lift rotors (especially after I saw a splendid Robur's Albatross) but dismissed them because they would get in the way of play tremendously.

I handwave the disparity based on Mars' lower gravity :)

The stubby wings will bear the engines, which will get double props and will be tiltable so as to enable upward, forward and downward propulsion (hell, they can even work as emergency brakes!)

I chose to arm Walkure slightly beter than the Aphid I already built. She will get a 77mm cannon on the bow, two 37mm Maxim pom-poms on the port and starboard barbettes and two Maxim machineguns to repell boarders on the wings of he bridge. She will also get armour plating on the gasbags and bridge and shields on the guns.

Looks very promising, I am curious about the outcome.
Might the KLS also carry bombs or a small party of "landing troops"?

All the structural hull parts now glued in place and the stack fitted t rest her on the flying standard she now looks like this (the zeppelins put on for the picture and a 28mm figure added for scale):

She will indeed carry a crew of sailors as well as Seebattallion (MartianerKolonialSchutztruppen) marines.

I would assume a marine or three aboard, but troop carrier is asking a bit much.

I still have a Nautilus I want to use as armored 'bag' troop carrier.

Doug

Edit: Of course, the Walkure would be MOST valuble as escort...
