Knights of Lorraine?
« on: February 23, 2017, 06:45:14 PM »
I've been building up, over the last 18 months, two Lion Rampant retinues to fight skirmishes in the Swiss-Burgundian Wars of the 1470s. I've got to the point where I can field 24 points a side (with a few mercenaries to fill in) but I'd like to keep recruiting so I can try some larger, multi-player games.

My stash of unbuilt Perry plastics includes some mounted men at arms and I thought I'd have a go at building some followers of Rene, duke of Lorraine to fight alongside my Swiss.

My question is, does anyone know of a source for heraldry of Lorraine nobles?  I've found Rene's arms but I want lower ranking types who might reasonably be involved in a pre- or post-battle skirmish.

I believe that some of the heraldry for Lorraine may be Quiché Or, set on a field of porcelain. lol

Sorry I will get my coat...

Not sure re the heraldry of noblemen of Lorraine.
The main soldiers for Lorraine wore a field device of a cross with two horizontal bars. They are shown on Swiss Chronicles - see here as an example.

Hope that helps, Simon.

Simon,

Thanks, that's a start.

Westwaller,

Yes, I think getting your coat would be a good idea. ::)

Just finding the names of some of Rene's retainers would be a start, I shall continue to Google.

That field device, isn"t that the Cross of Lorraine?
Although googling it gives some variations on the design...

Here's a list of noble families of Lorraine.

I will leave the further googling and research to you but would be great to hear later on what you find out and which families you will include in your armies:

Cheers Pocoloco, that's been interesting to trawl through. I now have one or two ideas

I have to say I'm surprised how hard this is proving. However, I'll get there eventually....

Hello,
there were not that many knight of Lorraine during the Battle of Nancy.

But if you want to get close to the reality, you have to figure de Knight of Bauzémont who is supposed to have killed Charles the Bold. (http://j57oihy.blogspot.lu/2015/11/le-chateau-de-bauzemont-54-propriete.html).

With this guy, the follower of René could be from the house of Vaudémont (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comt%C3%A9_de_Vaud%C3%A9mont), Joinville (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_seigneurs_puis_princes_de_Joinville) and the Duchy of Bar (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duch%C3%A9_de_Bar).

But, the truth is, they were mostly swiss men en alsatian people. :-)

Thanks guys, I'll certainly look into those ideas.

I've been reading the Memoirs of Phillipe de Commynes in search of ideas and I'm now considering representing the Count of Campobasso.  He was originally allied with Charles the Bold but switched to Lorraine's side just before Nancy in 1477.  He wasn't present at the battle but I'm playing Lion Rampant which represents small skirmishes aside from the main actions. He might work in that context.

After betraiting Charles the bold, just before the battle, Campobasso and his men was standed just near the Malzeville's ford waiting fort the fugitives.

Apparently he has killed the unknow soldier and ransomed the noble men.

I dont know how you could represent this brave knight :-D
