You're not on your own, I have a friend who loves the pulp game idea but refuses to touch metal in any scale, he has converted a number of plastic figures into suitable characters.  They do look very frankenstienish (legs are blue, body yellow, head white, arms red and green sort of thing) but do look good when painted, he of course prefering converting to painting so the whole thing is moving very slowly.
