Scratchbuilding with Plastic Sprue for 15mm Scifi
« on: 25 February 2017, 05:53:28 PM »
Hello again all,
It's a pity the amount of plastic sprue material gets thrown away.
I'm a firm believer in reduce,reuse & recycle.

Here are some items I built with sprue mostly.
A guard tower + Fence + gate ( complete with Floodlights & Sirens ). With hind sight it is better to use nylon mesh as metal mesh ( like I used) gets warped easily.
Crash Barriers for roads.
A Robot ( white plastic are bits of a plastic spoon)
Robot legs ( for more builds)
Mecha Bodies( includes PVC + card )
Spider drones ( heads are BB balls ).
and finally Rubble ( the easiest to do )

Simple but effective.. Go Ahead you know you want to make some....

Hello Germy,
Thanks , glad you like them.
Will do as soon as they're painted.

You do very nice scratchbuilds yourself, my fav being the 3 legged robots.

Well done, sir.
Very resourceful  and that gate/fence/watchtower combo is most effective.

And I felt clever for using GW sprue frames as door and window jambs, and part of rubble indicating room outlines in post-apoc games, while round 'others' for pipes...  :'(

Well done!!  lol

Thanks all for the kind comments, glad you like them.

I have uploaded painted pics for you to enjoy ( you will be happy now for sure Mr.P :):):) )

I have included a command post ( card etc. with removable roof ) & automated sentry gun turrets
 ( plaster of Paris ,card & PVC ) .

Will make a nice centre piece if I may say so myself . Quite happy with it.

Honestly you should give it a try, they are very easy to do .

BTW the bases as Floppy disk box separators. I also found out that floppy disk covers ( once you break them open ) take plastic glue well . Oh & their metal spindle makes an excellent metallic/magnetic bases.

Complete recycling. Lovely, simply lovely.
Enjoy

May you be inspired.

Thank you,
Building stuff out of sprue is very rewarding.
All should try it.
Imagine if manufacturers where to design reusable sprues, e.g. engrave them like bricks or riveted steel or veined wooded..

Indeed never throw anything from your games away, unfortunately one day you'll realise you have no more space to move let alone to get new stuff  :D :D :D & getting new stuff is most important  ;)

Here is another project I did , next to a Khurasan 15mm robot & a GZG 15mm armed citizen.
A robot called Spencer & a light Mecha.

http://castrarunis.blogspot.com.mt/2016/10/scratchbuilt-sprue-stuff.html

( After I finished the robot ,my respect for the sculptor of the Khurasan robot went up by 100 % . Working on sprue at that size is fiddly to say the least )

This basic robot design can be used for Starport Loader/Unloader , Muscle , Military etc just by changing the head & adding addon pods. The mecha is quite a straight forward design.

Enjoy

Lovely work.  Wish I had the time to re-use as much of my waste sprue (which I'm generating at insane rates since Dropfleet Commmander came out late last year) but it's always hard to find enough time to do.  Lucky if I manage to chop some of it up for rubble these days.

Didn't some manufacturer (Wargames Factory maybe?) used to take sprues back if you were willing to mail them to them?  I recall sending several jam-packed boxes to them, whoever they were.
