Antares - In-game pictures added 31st March
« on: February 26, 2017, 07:53:01 PM »
Apart from a few posts a little while back, I'm not seeing much Beyond the Gates of Antares on LAF. I feel duty bound to add some since it's such a great game.

These are images of my new force, the private army of space traders who specialise in game hunting. There is more to come.

Interesting.  What models did you use to build those, and what are they in Gates terms?  Didn't know the game had a design-your-own army system - or does it?

This is part of a Freeborn force. The first image are Antares figures with no modifications. The Native Americans (these are plastic Woodland Indians, originally made by Wargames Factory) serve as Freeborn Ferals with the addition of some of Warlord's weapon sprues. The more heavily armoured chaps represent Ferals given better armour. I used their new Algoryn plastics for these with a few bits and bobs from the Native American sprues.

Antares doesn't offer a "build your own force" as such but the Freeborn army has access to a lot of disparate tech (since they are traders) meaning you can customise them quite extensively.

Very nice indeed. Please keep posting GoA stuff. The more I see the more interested I get. Thanks!
I should be painting right now.

Very nice work! :)

I like Antares, but I do find it hard to get through the rules - there's always something tucked into a rule in one place that should really be somewhere else, and I can never find it during a game.

Clearer, less "chatty" rules and a proper index would have probably seen it become more popular IMO. I also think the push into releasing more models (and more plastic models) will also help Antares take off.

Nice conversions and painting. Really like the mix of feral and sci-fi you've created.

Lovely work and great conversions, I have an Isorian army in the lead pile about 2/3 finished. I really like the rules but other than on Facebook it does seem to have slipped by many forums

But I'm feeling that way with most new rule sets I'm trying of late. I think it's important to present a 'basic' set to learn on, 'chatty' both sells the set and tries to make learning comfortable at the front end, and add complexity later. But I've yet to see anyone do it and leave a coherent, usable, and full-bodied set of rules in the end.

Antares definitely looks interesting, but is part of the 'I retire in September, and then, let loose the hounds of war!'  :D

It is crying out for an army builder or something like that as you are spot on there is a lot of content in the rules and each faction is slightly different, add in drones and probes, ammunition and armour options and there is a lot to get your head around

Hmm, by "chatty", I mean that it's tone is quote conversational.

Whilst I appreciate that this is partly down to personal writing style and/or presentation preference, and partly down to a desire to include the reader rather than to simply drop the rules at their feet, it also takes longer to read and makes it harder to find what you're looking for.

Antares is a game which has a lot of rules and a lot of exceptions. Add on the many special abilities, special rules, and special terrain, and it quickly becomes hard to get through unless it's very clear, very well organized, and reasonably concise. Furthermore, each addition to the game introduces more unique rules, weapons, equipment, etc., which also increase the complexity. The lack of a full index is therefore rather baffling.

Anyway, I'll leave it there and offer my apologies; I don't want to derail the thread into an Antares rules discussion!
