Painting guides for the Indian Mutiny please?
« on: February 27, 2017, 08:40:03 PM »
I'm looking at starting a project on the Indian Mutiny in the coming months.

Could any of you be kind enough to direct me to good sources of information on uniforms worn by both sides? Ideally I'd like colour plates so I can see with my own eyes what should be what colour. Even better would be actually painting guides.

I hope this is not to much of an ask. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks again Marc.

Hi Marc,

A very good starting guide would be Mike Snook's Iron Duke website.
This is a direct link to his uniform page
http://www.irondukeminiatures.co.uk/p-4-uniforms-etc

Osprey has a few books on the subject The Indian Mutiny, British Soldiers in the Indian Mutiny and Victoria's Enemies (India)

There are still quite a few gaps to be filled especially about the mutineer forces but these will already give you an idea.

That's great thank you  :). A good bit on info to start off with!  I'm not aiming to get the project underway until probably fairly late in the year, but I like to have my research generally done well in advance.

A few more relevant on-line sites about the Indian Mutiny and the uniforms.

Mostly scenarios but a good read!

I'm another gamer planning to raise Indian Mutiny forces sometime this year. These are useful links, thanks for sharing.  :)

Another vote for the Iron Duke website for detailed uniform information, much more so than the Ospreys though they are are good starting point.

And look at the posts here by Jeff965 - all you need to know and aspire to, Mutiny-related!

Definately get the book by Bob French - very good on all the details. As far as colours go it's a moving target like butternut or Hodden grey...

Old issues of Wargames Illustrated - especially with color adds by Foundry.  Issue 10 if memory serves has some nice photos.  Issue 48 had what was for many years the best and simplest listing of uniform colors - but only in text, no imagery.  Very colorful period.  You can paint a large British force and never have to paint the same uniform twice outside of  particular unit - and that's not just talking about changing facing colors.
