At Uni there's a skip which is located close to the architecture building which I usually keep an eye on.
I have to confess: I'm a scrounger, and I have rescued bits of foamboard or old architects' models from inside the skip.
This time round I saw something green, luckily at the top of the skip away from anything too sticky: I thought I had found and rescued a gaming surface (!), then more rationally assumed it was some architect's model base, and then realised it was an old notice board - or not, for safe in the car I saw a catch (literally, not metaphorically): it was actually a presentation box for a rather large tray, with a fine baize-like material over its surface.
The green is a bit to bright, but it reminded me of the old GW green model bases, and for the sake of nostalgia decided not to cover it over.
Here it is - with some potential scenery if I go for the ruined abbey in grass look:
The lid opens, and my just under 2' x 2' rocky surface fits - after I removed the padding (more bright green material!), which I know have, to reveal a solid wooden base. So I can store 2 boards in the space taken by one, unless I partition the inside to hold models.
Here's the board in the board, with a stunt pumpkin-headed 28mm model for scale:
I am a bit tempted to die the surface material to a milder shade - I could also wear sunglasses I guess...
