Cossacks (Part Deux)
« on: March 04, 2017, 09:47:06 PM »
Wargaming....it's a sickness you know...Two weeks ago I decided to just do a small side project of a Cossack force. Nothing big, just 40 mounted Cossacks. Two weeks later I now have 64 painted mounted cossacks, 18 more to be  painted, assorted command stands and two cossack artillery pieces with Foundry converted cossacks on foot for gunners.....Did I mention its a sickness. Here is the overall commander and his scout (converted foot cossack on Old Glory horse, saddle is made with ribbon epoxy).
First the inspiration piece:

Love your guys. :-*
I think the Foundry Cossacks are great.
I have some for a Retreat from Moscow game.
Need to get back to them.
So little time and so much to paint.

How much big battery artillery did Cossack armies use? I've been wondering whether to allow my Zaporozian host a bit, but am worried that they wouldn't have been able to get their hands on the things easily. The Poles aren't likely to have supplied them with such stuff, they had no heavy industry, and captured guns would still have soaked up equipment and material that the Cossacks didn't have (bearing in mind that a lot of their support from Poland, and later Muscovy, took the form of corn, powder, and cloth).

I was operating under the premise of captured guns.  Although these older pieces have quite a long barrel length, their bore is quite small.  In the end, I just thought they looked cool.

Aside from finishing some basing on a few of the figures, my side project of a Cossack force is completed.  100 mounted, 32 dismounted, 2 artillery pieces with crews and command stands.  Now to find someone to ambush....   lol

All in all, not a bad 6 weeks worth of painting....I LOVE being retired!

Gorgeous!
"One of My Men Became Restless" focuses on 15mm Horse & Musket periods and 25mm Horse & Musket, Fantasy, Horror and Victorian everything! Occasionally there'll be stuff of related interest but it's mostly a painters blog.  See it all here: http://flashman14.blogspot.com/
