Some Pirates which I need to identify...
« on: April 18, 2009, 12:43:16 AM »
After being shafted by an obnoxious scallywag of a trader on another forum, I was after these Pirates through other means. I'm hoping someone here can identify them. The sculpting reminded me of some Artizan figures I have... but these weren't on their site so :(

Any help tracking these down would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Edit: Scooped by Lowtardog. Never mind, eh?  :)

Bloody hell! Those packs are over ten quid now. Grumble, moan, in my day you could buy your own indentured servant from the Woolworths and still have change from a thruppenny bit for some chips on the way home, etc...

I've got those as well, I've included them in my border Rievers bunch.

Well, given that Woolworth Germany is probably filing for bankruptcy, I guess nowadays you could by "the Woolworths" itself with a tenner, which would be the only sensible action given current food prices... ;)

FW Woolworths UK has gone, a victim of the current financial crisis. Seems really weird there are no Woolworths now. Has been one in every town since before I was born. Not right somehow, for there not to be a "five-and-dime" in my town anymore.

Funny, Woolworths don't seem to be slowing down here (as far as I know!). Are the ones in Europe the same as here? By that I mean grocery store and general goods.

Not groceries in my lifetime, but I think it may have years and years ago. But sweets, snacks and pop were the only foodstuffs sold there in my memory. A general store, as the Americans would call it, and a pretty cheap one at that. Toys, records, videos, clothes, kitchenware, small electrical goods, you name it, really.

Its passing has left a big hole shopping-wise in the small town nearest to me. I guess it will be filled by someone sooner or later, one would hope.

I believe it was the type of Woolworths made famous in modern times from the Civil Rights sit in. I think went out of business in the late 90's.  I know they started well before 1900 as my grandfather told me about them.  Whether they are the same chain, I do not know.

All these various international Woolworths are (or were) indeed offshoots of the original American company FW Woolworth* (as you say, famous for the civil rights protests). But the various arms in different countries became separate companies over the years, which is why some have gone bust while others continue.

Maybe we should change the name of this topic to "Woolworths Discussion."  :)

*Apart from, apparently, the ones in Australia and NZ, who have no connection with FW Woolworth, they just stole the name for its brand appeal (thanks, Wikipedia!).

All very good but how do you say it? One or two distinct syllables?

Woolworths or Wool....worths?
