2nd Anglo-Boer War - 28mm miniatures
« on: March 14, 2017, 09:33:59 AM »
Over the past few years I have been looking at the 2nd Anglo-Boer War as a project I would like to take on. I have looked at several different rule sets, but until now they have not seemed right, so the project has never taken off. The release of The Men Who Would Be Kings has changed that, since it is generic enough so that I can tweak the rules.

This will be a 28mm project.

For Imperial troops I have decided to go for Studio Miniatures Northwest Frontier Brits. They look to be in the correct uniform and also have the correct Lee-Metford rifle.

I am however not sure on which minis to use for the Boers though. Truth be told I am not to particular about whether their weapons are Mausers or not, no one will notice 2-3 feet away. But If I look at those listed as being for the 2nd Anglo-Boer War there are three companies: Old Glory, Wargames Foundry and Redoubt.

I have heard lots of good things about Old Glory's range, but I am unsure about their size as they are listed as 25mm, so will they look small compared to the Imperial Troops?

Wargames Foundry's Boers I am quite sure are too small.

When it comes to Redoubt I have read that they are too chunky, but also that they fit nicely with other ranges (Empress, BTD etc.), so I really have no idea about their size. Don't know anything about the quality of the sculpts either.

If I look past the minis specifically for the 2nd Anglo-Boer War a lot of companies carry Boers - Empress, North Star, Black Tree Designs etc. As I really don't mind them not having Mauser rifles one of them, perhaps makes some of these ranges better. Certainly Empress and North Star's Boers look great, not sure about BTD as the pictures on their site are very small.

So what would you guys suggest? And if anyone have images of some of the different ranges next to each other please post them.

Hi,Northstar have half a dozen packs Boers in their Africa range, most seem to be armed with Martini Henry's.
Modelled by Mike Owen of Artizan I believe so could be of use for you.
Sorry can't do links  :(
Cheers

I believe they will, don't have any of Studio's Brits but know that the Mike Owen Afghans match well with Studio's Afghans. :)

I don't know if Redoubt's sizes have changed over the years, or if their different ranges have different sizes, but I can tell you that I had some ECW Scots from them a few years back and they were massive, like 32 or even 35mm scale. They looked freakish next to the Perry's Covenanters they were meant to be supporting!

Below are some comparison between OG - Foundry - Redoubt with some Studio minis from the 1st Afghan War range behind plus a photo comparing standing/kneeling. I think they are ok together

Would you rate the OG and Redoubt quality to be on par with Foundry?

Foundry may be a tad better details but the price is also higher. As there are not a huge number of poses in either range I think a mix of these three together with Perry Mafeking is a good way to go. You can also add a few of the Empress/Footsore Interwar IRA/civilians as they have bolt action rifles. You should also scan Boxer rebellion ranges for armed civilians, Redoubt have a few good ones

So basically my choice is either to go with OG, Foundry and Redoubt or the bit bigger ones from Artizan, North Star, Empress and Perry.
