Nice find, interesting article.

Always find it interesting to see how "gaming"  used to be, and insights into how it evolved and continues to.

Fantastic, eminently shareable article. A great overall look at the early history of the "gamer" label in general. Thanks!

EDIT: The author deserves serious credit for the exhaustive citation of primary sources (including many images of actual primary sources) and extremely detailed research. This is academic-grade scholarship.

His book Playing at the World, though mainly a history of role-playing games, contains a wealth of information on the history of wargaming. It may be a bit concentrated at the US scene, as is often the case with studies that deal with wargames as forerunners of RPGs - see the more popular but very readable Of Dice and Men by Ewalt.
Anyway, fascinating stuff and good to see that games are investigated in a thorough and scholarly fashion.

Apparently one of the best teams playing the Fletcher-Pratt games was made up of seamstresses as they were used to estimating lengths of cloth and therefore good at guessing ranges...

That was a very interesting article. I am not surprised that D&D was a conduit for women to get interested in gaming, lots of fantasy genre novels have always been written by and for a female market.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.
