Orc Village (paper model terrain)
« on: March 16, 2017, 02:45:17 PM »
Hi guys,

I am working on a new terrain set: The orc village!

Here is a piece of concept art:

... and I have written a little post on my site if you are interested in how I started the design process (http://www.papierschnitzel.com/orc-village-sketches/)

I will show prototypes soon!

Let me know what you think.

Hi guys, I have the first prototypes ready. I enjoyed making these "different" huts so far. Cannot wait to start texturing, so that they come to life!

This is the basic shape of the orc hut. The interior space is 7 1" bases (so one in the middle and six around) for 100% print. Of course you can scale it to other sizes if required.

It will allow a couple of variations with different textures and I have also made some versions with different geometry add-ons. You can see more variations in this article here (http://www.papierschnitzel.com/orc-village-prototypes/)

They should work well with all kind of barbarians, dino-hunters etc. I have even thought of some sci-fi texturing options for a later set. But for now I have to finish this first  :)

It would be cool to have a full orc village made of paper buildings inspired by Warcraft 2 and 3 :) Heck, with some modeling skills you could even rip the actual game models complete with textures and make them into paper model templates... They are so low poly that it would work like a charm :)

I have looked at a couple of games, including the warcraft franchise. The look there is very special. I am hoping to emulate this a little with ornaments (for example the tusks everywhere) but I did not like the reverse slanted walls the orc buildings often had in the game. I am trying to distill the essence of orc buildings that I have seen in all the different places and make a version that is a) my own rendition of this topic and b) a little more universal to use (for example for stone age dino hunters, for conan the barbarian and his fellow mates etc).

But I guess with a little modding you can recreate the wow look closer with my model ... or as you say extract the mesh data and textures from the games (but that is not an option for me, for obvious legal reasons and also I like to do my own thing  :) )

Next step: leather texture. This was a new one for me. Took me a couple of tries but I think I have something to work with now. This is a test build of the medium hut roof. How do you like it? Looks leathery enough? Let me know if you have ideas for improving.

I have a couple more pics (with orc spikes :D) in this post on my site if you are interested: http://www.papierschnitzel.com/orc-village-textures-i/

Thank you guys  :) It will take a while until I can fill up a gaming board with the orc village but I am very much looking forward to!

I was asked how much the small tents have to be scaled down for goblins ... and I have to admit I have no idea  :)

So I dug out my old GW LOTR goblins and put them in scene with the new textured small hut/tent. I am thinking this size (100%) could be the goblins chief hut and for the regular goblins I would print and build it at reduced scale (I guess 80%?)

This is the new leather texture with more/smaller leather hides and some stitches and patches for damaged areas. Once the dirty layer is added it will look perfect  :D

Today I have built a couple of small huts to show the different leather variations I have. You can choose with or without dirt, lighter or darker, saturated or desaturated color and well ... colors. Right now I have brown and red, but I think green would work also. And then I am working on cloth and fur texture. That should give you tons of options!  :)
