Ornithopter
« on: March 21, 2017, 11:58:58 AM »
Last summer I got to discover a lovely piece of craftsmanship in the form of an Ornithopter (here you have the talented author's WIP. Damn nice job, Scalene!).
Ramshackle Games is planning to release it, but until then, the mastermind behind, Curtis, was so gente to let me have a prototype model (some work on the wings missing). Thank you, man!

I painted it strikingly white, lacking a definite idea of its purpose. Looked like a neutral, versatile colour.

But it needed some heavy weathering, chipping, rustiness and, well, to look like it has seen some world!

Then the wings. Those were tricky. They are sheets of acetate, but they needed 'something' to get attached to the hull. I made a few attempts of building a wire frame, but they all failed. The structure was too heavy for such a small contact surface to be glued. Long story short, I tried BBQ woodsticks. Once painted black they were reasonably hard to see at tabletop distance and the frame was much easier to glue to the main hull, proving to be resistent enough:

I love the whole concept. The design, everything. It screams OldSchool!

I'm using it for my RT setting, but I think there are a number of ranges that could seriously benefit from it (not-Dune, I hear? ;))

Wow that's a nice model and some sterling paint and model work by yourself, good stuff.  :)

Nice job I like it but....I'd change the wings for rotors if I owned one to make more of a VTOL.

Great looking vehicle. You've really added a lot to it with that paint job. The white body with paint chips, and the window effect really bring this model together.
And since it seems impossible to leave well enough alone, I'd say the wings could use something more solid added to the front edge. To make them look like they're part of the same vehicle. Maybe a thin piece of plasticard or rod, painted to match the body style. Just something to tie the whole thing together. Then again, it probably doesn't need anything.

Nicely done. I have that model on my desk now, complete but for the wings. I still haven't come up with a good solution for  attaching them.

That's so cool. The wings in acetate are a brilliant idea. I take it they also came from Ramshackle?

Yes, he included a wing print out with the kit.

Looks great, and the white paint job reminds me of the old Dune2 computer game. Well done!  :D

Thank you! The model is absolutely gorgeous, you just have to let you go, it paints by itself. I'm curious to see the official solution for the wings. :P

Nice job I like it but....I'd change the wings for rotors if I owned one to make more of a VTOL.

If you have a look at the first pic, you'll see there is a neat space at each side of the hull in which you can fit any other engine :)

Now that you mention it, I'm thinking of looking for rotors and stuff of the like; the idea of having a spaceport full of all kind of weird ships is appealing. Hmmm, no idea of where to start, but that will eventually happen... ;D

Yes, very Dune-esque, but with great potential for other worlds with the right alternative for the wings/engines.  I like the ornithoptor look, but I think a selection of different engine/wing options would be a good plan for Ramshackle.
