The first 'half-contubernium':

The Auxiliaries will be coming after the Greek cavalry and after the Elephants. Can't wait 8)

In fairness to Warlord the dwarf Romans fit in with the Perry/ Foundry EIRs sizewise and let's not forget they have quite a number of years under their belt now and they can as of now finally retire  ;)

Looking also forward to the Gauls. Very. Much.

Cheers

I love those Romans, but I wonder how durable the pila will be?

Great work on the Romans SP - a dour looking group of veterans.  Have some very old Hinchliffe & Lamming EIR's which could now be fleshed out to a 200 point Art de la Guerre force.   Hope these Victrix don't dwarf them too much!

Like you, looking forward to the Gauls and Greek cavalry.   Do I need any more elephants.............

Thanks for all your comments gentlemen  :)

@delbruck
I've dropped them accidentally and nothing happened. They seem to have a good flexibility!
Of course they can snap off but there are loads of replacements on the sprue if it comes to the worst. Being plastics they will be easy to repair with a good plastic glue  ;)

Great job SP, what washs do you use? Interesting to see you undercoat the figure silver first, any issues painting over the silver? I am kicking myself, I got the warlord army box a while ago along with some artillery before Victrix released theirs, still unpainted, I would like to replace them with Victrix, but who can afford that, might paint the warlord stuff up, sell it off and buy victrix, but it would take forever.
It would be interesting to see how warlords Auxiliary compare with victrix, they are a bit bigger than the legionaries, but I think they would still be small, but maybe usable.

@GunnerDunbar
I use Citadel washes, Agrax Earthshade mainly but for the armour Nuln Oil (Gloss) which seems to be thinner and darkens less. After the Matt Varnish I re-highlight the metal parts again tho, otherwise they look too dull.
I've had no problems painting over the metal primer (Leadbelcher Spray).

The WG Auxiliaries fit actually quite ok, they are a bit chunkier:

Great paintwork SP, they are nicely done :-*

Despite marching/advancing there is difference in the pose. These are great sculpts and what I like is loose arms for greater flexibility of construction/posing.

Victrix models do resist falling, yesterday I accidentally knocked 4 hoplites on a single base, they fell more than 1 metre - no damage, not even a loose shield. 8)

Once the praetorian shield designs are out it would be time to order! :D

Thanks for the reply, I use null oil also, I think yours look so good due to the highlights after the wash, will try that, they look like they match really nicely, wow you do a good job on these, that auxila looks the business.
You inspired me tonight, I have just started working on some marines, a mix of warlord Auxiliaries and wargames factory Caesarian Romans, arming them with spears and oval scutums, using all WF heads for this unit, not as much detail, but will try and bring out the detail in the painting, saving the Auxiliary heads for the Auxiliary unit which will also be half warlord half WF.

Very evocative paintjob, well done, as always! :)
Also nice to see that Warlord's auxiliaries are a good match, at least until Victrix comes up with their own set.

But my God, when they get it right, like this, you'd have to be blind to not realise what a massive step up in quality it represents compared with the typical metal figure.

Perhaps the photo above is a slightly misleading comparison. Warlord's EIR are one of their earliest offerings, while Aventine's sculpts cater for a more specific period and do offer a lot of well-researched, intricate detail. In regard to "quality" of sculpting: looking at my collection of old Perry and newer Hicks EIR metals they're at least on a par with Victrix.
So maybe not to everyone's taste, but what is? ;)
