Shark Wrangler - Amatheia, Caller of the Deep
« on: April 07, 2017, 07:04:03 AM »
Hi folks,

What we have here today is Amatheia, a beast handler of sorts for the Nereid force of DeepWars. This one was done almost entirely with inks, as per my usual method of washing and glazing. The scales were Turquoise ink mixed with 30-40% Liquitex Matte Medium and a bit of water to make a thick glop that ran into the cracks and basically did all of the work. The scales were then shaded with Dioxazene Purple ink and the edges highlighted with light blue and white - painting with the tip as much as possible for the final edge highlights. The skin was made really bright with magenta ink and white. Lots of washes and glazes to build up the color. Light glazes of Pthalo blue ink was used for shadows, though it is not really noticeable in these photos. It does help tie the skin together with the scales. The clothing was started with glazes of dark blue, a mixture of Pthalo blue and Black, sort of a Navy blue. It was highlighted with white mixed in to make it end up looking really washed out but a different color than the scales. The hair is a mass of Burnt Sienna ink highlighted with Golden Yellow and white paint. The trident was done with silver+black+Pthalo blue ink, glazed with black and blue ink, then highlighted with pure silver, mainly on the edges. The golden headress was a bronze base, glaze with Burnt Umber, then basic silver+gold highlights.

The shark was really tricky to blend but used only a few colors. The main colors were Turquoise, Pthalo Blue and Raw Umber inks, with some black paint. These were applied with more black mixed with blue+umber near the top of the back, further down, more turquoise was used and less black. About halfway down, the ink was stopped to make a countershade effect with a white underbelly. This area used turquoise+raw umber+white, with more white on belly and under the head and added more umber and turqoise as it went up the sides, finally blending more with the edge of the dark upper half. The highlight line was done with the same basic mixture, adding a bit more turquoise and white to get the highlight along the upper part of the flanks. Black and white paint was used to add details, like the dark fin tips and edge highlights.

The bases were many different ink colors, though they tended to blend into a dark greenish blue in the end. Edge highlights were done in white paint, then glazed with more inks to make them less harsh. The branching color was mainly Burnt Sienna ink, glazed with Pthalo Blue ink and highlighted with Golden Yellow paint.
