Darkest Africa, Hollywood style
« on: April 12, 2017, 12:13:00 PM »
Greetings Lead Adventurers.

I have always been a fan of the Darkest Africa stories, a sense of proper adventure! Currently I am reading Into Africa by Martin Dugard and just finished my copy of TMWWBK's so naturally thinking of jumping into this era of wargaming :D

I am not a purist (sorry!) so don't mind using a range of models , all be it if they are not historically correct (I love the perry's afghan/sudan models and may paint them up differently- sort of an imagi-nations type darkest Africa vibe going on)

So let me get to the actual point of this post other than just to talk about this awesome setting. I really like the ruleset TMWWBK's but for the type of game I want (narrative hollywood style) would I be better with a game like Congo or perhaps the rerelease of Darkest Africa?

Cheers all

In Her Majesty's Name or Pulp Alley work well for me...from half a dozen to a dozen or so figs per side, very narrative...almost rpg-lite.

There are quite a few battle reports on my blog (link in my sig) for both sets of rules if you're interested in seeing how they play. You can find a Pulp Alley Lost World one here and an In Her Majesty's Name Lost World one here.

Congo is prefect for this sort of thing. As well as being a fun set of rules, it comes with a very fine set of scenarios.

Don't limit yourself to one set of rules. Congo is brilliant and gives a real sense of adventure, particularly in the way its scenarios are structured. TMWWBK Uses larger forces and plays differently, but is still a lot of fun. Pulp Alley uses few figures with more emphasis on individuals. All are fun to play and use the same figures and terrain.

Calumma,

I agree I shouldn't limit myself but my budget isn't great at the moment :)

I would love a collection of rulesets!

We find Pulp works really well. See our campaign games (mostly TMWWBK with some Pulp actions interspersed).

You can make Pulp Alley work for almost anything where you want small groups of figures to engage in very Hollywood style dramatic adventure. The Gangs rule is something I use for groups of natives or crocodiles. Besides the Pulp Alley rule book, you'd want to get the Pulp Leagues book because that has rules for Gangs, Terrors, and other stuff that you'd want to use.

For flavor of Darkest Africa on a budget, I'd suggest looking at these links to the original Chris Peers Darkest Africa rules archived online at these links provided by Happy Wanderer in an earlier thread:
