Last week we played Umayyad Arabs vs Visigoths. Two quite similar armies, with some large units of spear, some decent quality cavalry, and some medium and light foot. I was commanding the Arabs and my opponent Gareth was commanding the Visigoths, in his second game with these rules.
The armies at deployment:
The Visigoth army. Two units of spearmen in the centre, cavalry on their right and a unit of medium foot archers and three units of light foot on the left in the rough ground.
The Arabs. Three units of spearmen in the centre with a unit of Dailami and a unit of hillmen (both medium foot) on their right. Five units of cavalry on the left.
The Arab Cavalry. A unit of Turk horse archers, two units of Jund armoured heavy cavalry, a unit of Ghazi medium cavalry and a unit of Bedouin light cavalry.
The Visigoth centre and right.
Visigoth Cavalry. One unit of Bucellarii (armoured lancer cavalry) and three units of Gardingi medium cavalry. On their flank is a unit of javelin armed light cavalry.
In the opening moves the Visigoth light cavalry on their right unwisely moved onto the hill, putting themselves out of command range. The Arab Bedouin light cavalry took advantage and quickly routed them. The Bedouin cavalry then charged the flank of the Visigoth cavalry line as the Ghazi cavalry charge frontally. One unit of Gardingi cavalry was routed, leaving the Visigoth line vulnerable to being rolled up from the flank.
On the Arab right, the Dailami (elite armoured medium foot) were eager to get to grips with the archers facing them.
The spearmen in the centre engaged, with losses on both sides. As both sides has deep formations (large units), this would be a long slog. The Dailami quickly defeated the bowmen they were fighting and headed off towards the Visigoth camp.
On the far right the Arab hillmen chased off the Visigoth light foot, and were lucky to survive the shooting before catching and routing two of the enemy archer units.
On the Arab left the Visigoth lancer cavalry charged into the Arab spearmen, and the Visigoth medium cavalry routed the Bedouin cavalry and pursued, setting themselves up to be charged in the flank by the Arab Ghazi cavalry and quickly defeated.
With both flanks gone it was looking pretty hopeless for the Visigoths. Mounting losses led to an army morale test, and with one more unit of cavalry defeated the army reached it's break point and was defeated.
