« on: April 20, 2017, 09:21:45 PM »
I just finished building this 1/56 Corsair.  I'm excited with the results!  Now its on to the paint.  I'm planning a USMC version for the Solomon Islands Campaign.

Totally shocked that you didn't carve the gull wings as one piece! lol lol  All kidding aside, beautiful work as usual and  I look forward to seeing it painted.

Andym: Propeller is a pain but not very difficult to assemble. Each blade is cut and shaped separately then glued to the hub, but I struggle drilling the pivot hole dead center. This is where I could use a miniature lathe.  I end up shaping it while its spinning on the tip of a drill.

Lon:  The pattern I used dated from the 40's and some of the details were not quite accurate, especially the wings.  They are carved in one piece, then scored/cut/angled/glued into gullwing shape.   Getting all of the angles close to correct and then positioning the wings in the fuselage was the real challenge for this plane.

Humakt:  Basswood seems to be the preferred material for miniature carving. It is harder than balsa and has tight grain. Sanding in 220 grit gets rid of large scratches. Then I spray with sandable filling primer(auto body), sand again with 220 then 00 steel wool, then paint.  Fuselage =I cut out side profile with band saw then all other shaping is done with sanding blocks (80-220 grit) = no lathe.  Inset engine cowl = All of the negative space cuts are done with a dremel "auger" bit (see my other posts for a photo)

Part of this current Corsair project involves locating a proper pilot figure.  Nobody makes a suitable USN/USMC pilot so I did a little conversion using the TAG "General":

He's a clever bugger isn't he? Not only does he carve masterpieces, he can sculpt too.
