Triumph & Tragedy Slavers game Pictures
« on: May 18, 2019, 12:25:11 AM »
We recently played (or re-played again) the "Slavers Run" scenario developed by Bjorn and Lars and posted some time back in the T&T board:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=28401.0

Only a short game it turned out, so not too many pictures, and still only crappy cellphone quality unfortunately.  But as the Zanzibari player at least they hide my shame of a badly botched plan and rather ignoble defeat.

We had played versions of the scenario a few times and always had close games, but not on this occasion.

This was the table, about 5ft square;

Zanzibari had to escort the captured slaves from the village off the table via the old rope bridge and burn the village for a complete victory.

That Bridge;

The peaceful Village before the raid;

For the Zanzibaris it all started so well, a valuable haul of women, children and young men was gathered along with livestock and trade goods;

So with the order to move out given and the village put to the torch the escape began;

The Zanzibaris and a troop of mercenary musketeers escorted the captives along the winding trail towards the river while a troop of trained (but poorly paid it turned out) Askaris followed along just inside the jungle to cover the flank.

However the slavers had become greedy and raided the area too often the local natives had developed an effective counter plan;

Rather than attack the slaver's column as they reached it the Natives waited near to the riverbank and massed their forces. Then spurred on by the chants and magics of their Witchdoctor they rushed the column head on, charging through the ragged volley from the mercenaries they overwhelmed the slavers in a flurry of deadly thrown and stabbing spears;

Surprised by the speed of the native assault the Zanzibaris barely managed a shot (or a photo opportunity) before they too were overrun. At which time the underpaid and under-appreciated Askaris thought better of getting involved and made a dash through the critter infested Jungle to the river........a few of them made it.....

Another fun game of Triumph and Tragedy. We now use event and tactic cards with all our games which really build the narrative of the story, even if they can turn the best laid plans to crap.

Figures mainly Foundry or Copplestone with converted Warlord Zulus for the majority of the natives. Scenics mostly scratchbuilt, Native huts from Grand Manner.

Love your figures and terrain.
I don't play colonials much any more.
I have a ton of figures.
Need to get back to playing the period.
I always have a great time.

This is what we want! I wouldn't worry about the number or quality of pictures, looks great to me. Lovely terrain and figures. Makes me want to get back to the painting and gaming tables. Thanks.

Nice.  Have we seen that rope bridge before?  Regardless, can you clue us in on the build technique for that lovely bridge?

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated. There is a lot of interest in Colonial T&T skirmish games here currently so other AARs to come in due course.

@15s:  The bridge is my simplified version of this incredible build:
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/hirstarts/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7998&p=80400&hilit=rope+bridge#p80400
I use bamboo skewers for a simple flat base instead of the more accurate (and better looking) bottom wires, but otherwise done as per the link.

@SMM: Native huts from Grand Manner IIRC, perimiter fence around the village (Kraal actually) is snapped grape vine twigs from my garden

robh, thanks for the link to the other bridge and its tutorial.  And the combination of yours and the linked bridge gives the idea that I will build one very like yours and then add a couple of end bases to also be able to have one similar to the link - two for the price of 1.25 bridges as it were.

Your bridge is easy to add to most games.  The other needs specific terrain to match.  Oh, I think I will also need to build some sort of opposite end 'stairways' up to the higher bridge with matching 'wings', maybe three for the price of 1.75?  :)

Rob, that looks great. I’m currently reading a Wilbur Smith book about African exploration and slaving etc so your game hits the spot.

I’m not familiar with Triumph and Tragedy but you obviously are happy with them - must take a look.

Very enjoyable AAR - thanks.

They are great rules, designed to give a real narrative feel to the game.  Sadly although the Colonial expansion is available the core rulebook is out of print currently. But it does appear on sales lists and eBay.
Good news is that Bjorn is considering a reprint or likely a pdf release in near future.
