Gothic Horror set in the AWI period?

I've been toying lately of starting a small gothic horror project set in the AWI period. Foundry has lots of character types for this, and though I like the period itself, I have no desire to game it as a war. Anyone done this before?

Any thoughts or ideas for beasties? Werewolves, ghouls, vamps, etc?

Great idea. If you haven´t seen it, you should watch the movie "Sleepy Hollow". It includes the "headless" horseman and is set in the post AWI period. West Wind has all the miniatures.

Sometime ago there was a thread on this board by Rabbitz who had made a wonderful New England village for Sleepy Hollow style horror games.

It would be a fun project as there are all sorts of options to take, as mentioned you have the Sleepy Hollow games or perhaps look at Native American folklore with the Wendigo etc, perhaps even Cthulhu or shape shifting Native Americans, Werewolves etc, Old World Vampires arrived to start new colonies or even witches from the earlier infamous Salem trials.

Thanks guys! I can feel the wheels turning already. LOVE the Wendigo idea. Even Sasquatch would be good (I have the Pulp Figures ones).

Beleive it or not, I've not seen "Sleepy Hollow" but will soon remedy that. I remember watching the Disney "filmstrip" one back in the 70's in the public school.

There is an RPG for a gothic horror AWI called Colonial America. Has some interesting background notes but weak mechanics.

As to tabletop play, I ran a game several years back where American were sent to Innsmouth to root out suspected Tories.

I like that idea as well. Maybe throw in some deep ones and such.

I know of one blog which features the AWI with a gothic twist, well
magic and zombies at least:

Check out the Magic and Zombie catagories. The background is based on the Traitor to the Crown series of novels by CC Finlay.

There are also a few AWI graphic novels with horror elements available as well. Revere, The Black-Coat and Sons of Liberty are three I'm familiar with.

I am working on a something similar to use alongside my F&IW miniatures thanks in part to the above blog and Silent Invaders painters league entry previously mentioned. It's something a little different for me and it may interest some of the younger members of our club when I eventually get around to completing them.

Unfortunately it was a game from four or five years ago, so no pics. There were deep ones though, an awful lot of fishy deep ones (I used Ral Partha sahaugin).  Once the players had triggered the oncoming hordes I started ringing an old school bell in a box. It gave a distant effect and really got on their nerves.

Absolutely support the recommendation that you view Burton's Sleepy Hollow.  It's a great period mood piece filled with tons of architectural and costuming inspiration.

Also second the Native American myths for plenty of supernatural baddies to throw at your colonists.  And the political divisions that existed in the American society regarding independence could lend itself to a lot of red herrings events that could be infighting disguised as other worldly acts (and vice verse).  And the French could always be in the wings stirring up anti-British sentiment among the colonials and the Native Americans.  You could throw in some "super science" as well as lots of scientific research was going on at the time.

There's a ton of possibilities there.  Good luck and be sure to keep us updated on your plans and any game reports.
