My Conquest Miniatures native Americans
« on: March 31, 2011, 04:07:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

Since last summer, I've been slowly plugging away at my next project: 17th-18th century skirmish games set in the "Ohio Territories" in North American.  Initially, it will feature native American tribes against each other, but eventually I plan on introducing courier de bois, English and French traders, soldiers, settlers, and so on.

I plan on using Ganesha Games' "Song of Drums and Shakos," a skirmish set written for Napoleonics, but easily adapted to French & Indian War or any black powder era.

Here are the figs I've painted up so far.  I'm using Conquest Miniatures' excellent line.

Delaware Warriors

Miami Warriors

Iroquois Warriors

"Generic" Woodland Indians

I just finished up another batch of six, so will post pictures of them once I've taken them if people are interested...

Very nice, and really interesting choice of bases. Don't think I have seen anyone use that kind before? I like them though  :)

Are you referring to the base itself, or the flocking for it?  The bases are 1" square wooden ones from Litko Aerosystems, with magnetic material on the bottom.  I prefer square bases for skirmish when the miniatures are intended to fight in melee.  I feel it makes it more clear who is in contact with who (which is important in the rules system I'm using).

The flocking is a multi-step process, of course.  I decided to do something different than the standard green grass look.  Thus, the rock piles and "bushes" of Woodland Scenic materials.  I like the effect, too, but I can't vouch for it being 100% historic for warfare among the Eastern Woodland Indians!

Nice work Mike.

I'll be interested to hear how your games go using 'Song of Drum and Shako'. I"ve managed to play one solo F&IW game using the rules.

That's interesting, Barry.  Did you use any modifications to the rules?  In particular, did you use the "better melee weapon" rule?  I have to admit I'm not all that crazy about that rule.  Not that I don't think it fits for the original Napoleonics focus.  I understand lance vs. bayonet and all that stuff goes with the period.  The real reason is I simply don't like the extra "step": Remembering you get +1 for your better melee weapon, but if you lose you have to subtract one from your score.  I'm not sure it as good of a fit with the French & Indian War / Eastern Woodlands warfare, either.

I'd be curious to hear a report from your solo game...

Thanks for the kind words, too...!

Very nicely painted warriors  8)

I agree re the bases, I too prefer square ones for the same reasons + cutting out any doubt as to who's in the arc of fire in certain rules. Both round and square can look very good, yours are superbly finished.  :)

That's interesting, Barry.  Did you use any modifications to the rules?

Hi Mike,

I used no modifications. Not much to report regarding the game I'm afraid. One side got all the good dice rolls, so it was pretty much a one sided affair and over pretty quick. Unfortunately I was unable to play another game and I've only managed to play that one game. I plan on playing a few more games over the coming weeks as I want to introduce the rules system at our local club. I'll try to keep some notes and take some photos.

Actually, it was your reports on Fanaticus some time ago regarding some dark age games you played with 'Song of Blade and Heroes' which led me to buy the rules in the first place.

Cheers,

Barry

It is weird how that works!  I'd read someone else's posts about it somewhere, then went out and read net reviews of the rules system.  I wrote up some stuff online and also in the local HMGS chapter newsletter.  And those both led others to buy the rules.  There is a definite pyramid or "viral" affect to positive word of mouth!

Oh, and thanks for all the positive comments, everyone!  I have another batch of them on my desk right now...!
