Thanks, Peder!
Another great tip.

I was actually aware of that one and have a little stash of my own, but the 'chipping' of the tree bark and not causing any harm to the tree itself should keep everyone happy.
 :)

You do realise that we now expect you to reveal ALL of your secrets!

May I refer you to http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=22356.0?

Maybe I was a bit premature asking for a "How To"?  lol

Excellent informative stuff , thanks Hammers  8) 8) 8)

Some of them already are but don't expect too much of this thread. I am a busy man IRL and my main project is CRotA.

Considering the dangerous environment I find those images of serious soldiers with shorts, knock knees, big ears and huge pith helmets funny but strangely endearing.

That's how we built the biggest empire in history. Funny-looking Brits - so monumentally unthreatening. How could they possibly be dangerous imperialists...? ;)

By all mean. Perhaps I then may drw your attention to another virtue of the Betula family? Their seeds look remarkably like little leaves, indeed almost like maple leaves...

They end up in droves in gutters in autumn (it is now in fact high seasons). I have bags, nay sacks , of the stuff in the shed which I have rinsed and now use as forest litter, flock, vines etcetera. They are hardish and answers well to dye, paint and glue.

We have some Birch trees in the garden, unfortunately not near any paving/roof gutters or anything from which they can easily be salvaged. I may still be able to collect some, though, so I'm curious as to what you rinse them in? Just ordinary soap water or something special?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I dont bother rinsing them.
I just dry them out.
Once PVA glue has been used to fix them to a base or whatever, that seems to work just fine and seals them too.

(I hope....).

If I need just the leaf-like shell of the birch seed I put a hand full of the collected seeds and sort of pick out the shells. I don't bother with that if I plans to use the stuff as forrest litter. You don't need to wash them or anything like that.

The above pic looks quite weird since there are no matching leaves on the trees, but you get the idea how I use them.

Dyed green yellow and red they can look something like this...

In fact, why not look at this entire page. It's a bit old hat and a long ramble but gives you an idea about how to deal with birch seeds and how to use them.

OK, that makes sense. I'll see if I can get some salvaged from the garden.

I used to have a bag of them, bought much too expensively from Antenociti, but it has disappeared somewhere among the many boxes I store my stuff in.

So how much will it cost me for a bag of birch and a quick explanation for dyeing them? ;)

It will cost you dick. The seeds are free in your yard and the I am sure you already have ink wash in your paint drawer. The link above should explain it all. If you are not careful I shall make a How to... And make it Sticky!

I'm hyper allergic to birch, so if I had a house, they would be my heating and smoking material ;)
The reason I asked is that there are "leafs" on the market in which an equivalant of a snus tin sets me back 5-6 quid...
