Hellgate: London inspired future templar
« on: 13 October 2008, 10:41:25 PM »
Hi folks,

I've been playing some Hellgate: London again lately (hacking up zombies and demons is an excellent relaxant....).
While the game has it's (widely discussed) flaws, I find the setting really appealing. (for those who don't know the game: Wiki and official site.

On a whim, and since I was in the process of painting some zombies anyway, I decided to see if I could make my own version of one the game's iconic character classes, the Templar.  So I had a root around, and found a miniature that already matched the imagery. (In the process I discovered it's hard to find any fully armoured knights who don't have a bathtowel hanging from their belt...)
It was Hasslefree's Dynamic Tyriel, this is her after the first passes with greenstuff tonight:

I'm not exactly happy with the smoothness of the belt, I may remove it and do it over.

Once this has hardened, I can do the remaining things: Add decoration to the bevor, add a small powerpack to the back, maybe I'll replace the sword with one a bit larger and more impressive. I'm hoping that my skills with greenstuff are enough to sculpt an empty Templar helmet to put on her base. I'm not too confident about that though.  :?

Basically, she's supposed to come out something of a cross between him and her.

Bye, Modhail

Thanks!

I'm lucky that the original model's armour is already a close match to the style of the Templar's armour. It means I only have to add the "tech" bits.
Just a few more things to add and it's finished.
Hopefully I can get some time in tonight.

Bye, Erik

Grmbl, tonight didn't go as well as yesterday did...
I tried adding the cross to the bevor and the banding to the breasts to match the artwork, but couldn't manage it... The model is petite as it is, and adding such extremely fine detail, well it was just beyond my skill with greenstuff. I just couldn't get it neat and even enough. (Maybe I should have kept away from the coffee at work...)
So now, my hope is on simulating the detail on the bevor and breastplate with paint.

I tried making a loose helmet to put on the base, but again, the shakes struck.
It does look something like a templar helmet though... one that's been run over by a tank several times...  :blackeye:
I may need to rethink my approach, as I tried sculpting the shell over a former for the area occupied by the head. If I try again, I think I should try just making a solid helmet and just drilling out the hollow for the head once everything is hardened. And trying to do less in one go.

Anyway, pics:

The powerpack, or better: what can be seen of it, from under her hair.

The shame..er, helmet...
So, any advice from more experienced modellers?

Well, the sculpting part is finished:

(somehow the model seems to be resistant to sharp pictures.)

Painting will have to wait until I finish my lot of zombies. (12 down, 14 to go, deadline is november 29th. I paint sloooww....  :()
Oh, and I found her some friends in the meantime.

Bye, Modhail

So, you're basically turning a pc-game into a miniatures game?

I like that!  8)
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Well, I didn't plan to, I did the first conversion on a whim, and it's kind of snowballing now...  ::)
I already have the zombies, and was planning to build some city terrain anyway, might as well add Demons, Templars and the other factions. I mean, it's only like, twice the work of what I was originally going to do?  ;)

But, yeah, I am. I like the idea behind the setting, and figured it would make a nice co-operative skirmish. I've (almost) got some templar miniatures converted now, near-future military types are easy to find (I'll probably just raid the Infinity game range for them...) and Demon miniatures are very common... I'm just having a bit more trouble finding suitable Cabalists.

I've still got to find/make a suitable set of rules to use. And decide wether, and how, I want to include the random "loot" drops.

Oh, well, what's one more project on an already too large pile?

Regarding rulesets - how tough are the heroes?

I guess that using something like the .45A-system would require to much work to do the hi-tech weaponry and equipment, but how about something like the Super System?

I would expect Future Wars (or its predecessor - 'Future Warriors: Kill Zone' ) might be useable, too.

Or maybe Combat Zone: http://combatzonechronicles.net/

Well, I haven't yet familiarised myself with the military and Cabalist factions in the game, but the Templars are pretty darn tough. About a third of the way in the game loose mobs of 3 to 6 zombies cease to be a real threat (unless backed by bigger nasties).
The heroes are still basically humans though, much of the power comes from training and gear. The Templar armour for example is powered armour, with strenght and speed assists as well as an A.I. controlled medical suite. Low level powerfields are also common but these are generally rapidly depleted and slow to recharge, good at range, but useless in melee.

Thanks for the suggestions Argonor, I'll have a look at them.
I'm half considering No Limits (http://www.wargamesunlimited.net/nolimits/index.html) at the moment. I haven't actually tested those rules out yet, though, so I don't know how they actually work on the table...

Bye, Modhail
