So when white knight released his renaissance Zombies I light bulb went on above my head.
How about a bunch of rogueish Elizabethan mercenaries fighting in the Low Countries.
They have a constant run ins with their arch enemies the dastardly Spanish! (apologies to any spanish readers, the English are just as dastardly, probably more actually!)
But when both hear of a hoard of gold taken by a mysterious wife of a local burgomeister (played by giselle)
and guarded by her smelly, shambling landsknechts. They rush to the scene to make themselves rich. A series of games using the 7th Voyage rules and the fortcoming supplement
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-n76ZNSHGS0Y/VFEphJ3R8FI/AAAAAAAACIU/uTWhoe7LyVo/s640/blogger-image-1528532230.jpg)
That's the plan anyway. It means I can get some my toys on the table and try out the crooked dice rules which I've been itching to play for ages.
-
Very cool. :)
Trying to do a similar thing with our SYW stuff.
How are the 7th Voyage rules?
-
Oooh! :)
Please DO share AARs and reflections on, how the rules work for this particular subject!
I recently played my first game of Pike & Shot and Zombies, and although those rules capture the renaissance/zombie feel very well, they are more a miniatures-based semi-RPG than a miniatures skimish game (which is fine, given an ample numbers of players that can get together on a regular basis for some light-hearted zed-bashing), so I would like to find another set more suited for one-on-one skirmished between humans and undead (and humans and humans, for all that matter).
-
Those are some SPLENDID looking miniatures finished in an OUTSTANDING fashion. They would be a pleasure to play with regardless of the game. GREAT WORK!
-
OOOOOOO!!! I've just been looking for witch finder general type rules. Tell me more about the 7th voyage Witching Hour supplement. When are they expected to be out? The Crooked Dice forum seems to be locked down to new members so I can't check there.
-
Those look really nice :-*, they are coming along more than nicely. I dastardly dare to say so :D!
-
OOOOOOO!!! I've just been looking for witch finder general type rules. Tell me more about the 7th voyage Witching Hour supplement. When are they expected to be out? The Crooked Dice forum seems to be locked down to new members so I can't check there.
http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/7th-voyage-the-witching-hour-pdf/ (http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/7th-voyage-the-witching-hour-pdf/)
It's out now and covers all kinds of gothic and fantasy folklore things, so would be perfect for anything inspired by the likes of Witch Finder General, Castlevania, Solomon Kane etc.
Just a few of the new casts types include Witch Hunters, Plague Doctors, Old Crones, Wild Druids, Adventuring Priests, Asylum Inmates, Ghouls, animated Marionettes and more, plus the Headless Horseman and Baba Yaga also make an appearance, plus there's new item cards for equipment like Holy Water and Jack-o-Lanterns.
I'm hoping to dig out my minis and get a game in soon, so I'll be sure to take some snaps and write up a battle report :)
I've got a thread on my 7th Voyage collection over on the Age of Myths, Gods and Empires board, if you wanna check out that. http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63552.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63552.0)

This looks awesome. I just picked up the PDF for The Witching Hour supplement for 7th Voyage. I haven't had a chance to play yet but I hear really good things about the system. On a side note, Otherworld Miniatures has stated that they are preparing to release their Otherworld Skirmish rules which are built on the same 7TV system. Very exciting times to be a miniature gamer.
-
Very nice looking project. If you're looking for more figures you might want to check out these fellows:

-
Love the Elizabethan period - those Foundry figures are great; I bought them for a simialr project but have yet to paint them...
-
A lovely themed game and cracking painting. I have these foundry figures together with eureka Portuguese and they are bother great ranges. I use mine for Brazil but think could easily morph them into WOR etc intact mine were originally English fighting in Ireland who are now french colonists .
Donnybrook is also certainly worth considering as I am now looking at using these rules
-
Great stuff. 8)
During the 80's, there was a "ligne claire" style comic series in these parts (Flanders) that followed some Flemish "Geuzen" in their struggle against the Spanish occupation and featured supernatural elements that would offer some great inspiration. Inspiration was drawn from contemporary artwork from Hieronymus Bossch and Pieter Brueghel and it featured an alchemist, witches,... I don't think they were ever translated to English, but might be worth tracking some down anyway.

I should really track those down WK, i think I read one or two as a kid at the local library. (in dutch)
-
Haha! those are fantastic! They've already given me some ideas for other creations of the mysterious mistress. I've already been thinking about doing a ghostly Knight as well as some ghouls and wolves and other nasties but I like the goat headed beasty, I'll have to do one of them. I've made a start on the zombies and I'll post them up when they are done. I'm waiting on the main rulebook getting here and I splurged a load of money on the new 4ground fantasy houses as well as doing some work on scenery for my table (trees, rivers, bridge that kind of thing). As soon as i"ve got enough figures for a game I'll rope someone into playing and then I'll post up a report on my blog as well as here. I'm fair looking forward to it.
@Hobbit, yeah I've seen those figures, they were the Graven Images range and then got bought by Crann tara who seem to have passed them on again. I haven't bought any yet but when I get round to painting all my foundry figs I'll probably get some.
-
Yes, formerly Graven Images as you say. I bought a fair few when they were first released and they've mostly sat in the "to paint" pile ever since (save a few used for Mordheim). They're quite chunky but I imagine they'd work well with the Foundry chaps. I really must add the Baby Eating Bishop to those I do have lol
-
Great idea and lovely miniatures!
-
Managed to spend a little bit of time to paint my first couple of zombies
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-w9Bm4WP2T3Y/VFaKOADjoZI/AAAAAAAACKM/REXAeM1nHE0/s640/blogger-image--1017421208.jpg)

Sir Thomas Cocksure is not impressed!
-
As I noted on the Pikes. Muskets etc. board, will love to see where you go with this.
-
Interesting project. I look forward to seeing updates.
Tony
-
Looking good! First painted ones anywhere I think. 8)
Regarding possible inspiration, from the same author as the Geuzen, there's also this, which features the ghost of a Spanish noble, murdered by the Duke of Alva/Alba because he was bringing an order from the Spanish King to stop the siege of the Flemish town of Kriekebeek.
Another story figures the Dulle Griet (though in present day), taken from another Brueghel painting. The great thing about this one is that Lead Adventure Miniatures do a figure for her.

Renaissance zombies...... Whats not to like :D
All the best. Aly
-
De Geuzen! Forgot about that! I should get some of those. on the inside cover there always was a foldout incision by Brueghel. And they were done by Vandersteen himself, and not his apprentice.
My whole Mordheim obsession in 1999/2000 was fueled by Breughel and what I remembered from the Geuzen comic.
-
Another one done
(http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g137/coljmurray/DD26BD18-3999-45CD-9B88-007A98079B36.jpg)
I'm loving the Flemish comics, it's quite a relief that I'm not the only person coming up with this mad idea. I also just remembered last night that citadel did a headless ghost in their night horrors range
(http://thumbs1.picclick.com/d/l400/pict/181507658336_/Citadel-Metal-OOP-Games-Workshop-Night-Horrors-Headless.jpg)
and I think I've managed to secure myself one!
-
Great thread. Lots of inspiration for my own horror game based on Solomon Kane :D
-
Quick update. Got the Zombies finished
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_TFrGAoqijQ/VFoglk4duoI/AAAAAAAACKs/DASEbDEbjDM/s640/blogger-image--712197169.jpg)
And I've started work on the rest of the casts for an upcoming game.

And to add a bit of punch to the villains there will be some spaniards
(https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-EdtwG57Teyk/VFo5w6sCQlI/AAAAAAAACLc/PDV37T69wgY/s640/blogger-image-1404157578.jpg)
Attempting to stop the Spanish from taking advantage of Giselle's dark arts in order to defeat the beggars is Sir Thomas Cocksure an his two (as yet unamed) Brothers in arms

And their brave crew of freedom fighters.
As ever, more on the Blog.
-
VERY NICE STUFF! All the Folk, living or otherwise, are OUTSTANDING or soon will be. This is becoming an increasingly WONDERFUL thread to follow.
-
Awesome, so very awesome. I am really tempted to drop my current projects and start my (as yet totally unpainted) Elizabethans.
-
Quick update. Managed to get Giselle and Hurtz finished without falling foul of the wife's temper!

Some more bits and bobs on the blog and I've also got a date to play a game in a couple of weeks so I need to get o with building the 4ground houses I bought as well.
-
Hurtz is awesome! Looks like he was an original figure rather than a conversion. :-*
-
Btw, hope you don't mind me reposting your pictures of the zombies on my blog with a link to this thread?
-
No, I'd be honoured, on you go! :D
-
Great stuff - they look excellent. :)
-
Great work so far, am very tempted to steal your idea regarding Hurtz.
Great conversion
-
Great project and cracking painting, love the con 8)version too
-
Wonderful painting and SO productive!!
Hurtz the bodyguard (and ex-family goat)
lol lol lol
-
Brill! I absolutely love the Hurtz figure!!
BTW what do you use to cover your bases?
-
Fantastic thread and great work.
You started me googling on "De Geuzen" just to look at some pretty pictures. I did not see it translated, in fact all the pages I found about it were in Dutch as well. Too bad for us as it looks right up my alley. :(
You have a very lively style with wonderful brushwork. This is an inspirational project to follow.
Thanks for sharing!
Jevenkah

It's a shame, but I guess it's a very nationalistic subject matter, with limited appeal to foreign markets.
Wonderful inspiration for miniature designs though:

They do look like a lot of fun. As I'm basing this part of the project on the 7TH voyage / 7TV theme i figured each game would take the shape of a TV episode. Each week Giselle and her Spanish Aliies come up with another dastardly plan to help defeat the Geuzen. The plan usually involves some kind of monster or supernatural being and I've been thinking about what they might be. So far I've got the zombies which will probably be returning characters plus I could have the headless ghost, the spectral knight, the big green meanies (foundry renaissance orcs), lumbering brutes (the old marauder ogres of which I've got one) etc etc
-
The aforementioned Dulle Griet from LAM could be another. A generic witch would also work.
-
I was thinking of Dulle Griet as a guest star rather than a villain and Giselle is my witch, she wouldn't take kindly to competition.
Then there is always these guys
(http://product-images.highwire.com/4540040/2282524-inquisition5_290.jpg)
-
Oops, double post. It's ok though as it's to bring you another couple of co-stars for my show.
Sir Jack Falstaff and The Mad Monk!
-
Those are two very personable Rogues, AND BEAUTIFULLY painted. VERY WELL DONE!
By the way, who makes Falstaff?
-
He's from Foundry's swashbucklers range, most of the figures are. A lovely range of figures.
-
I'm really enjoying this thread - some great miniatures and an original theme.
Thanks for posting the images.

Great work on Falstaff and the monk. :)

Those comics look very interesting. I would love to read them. Anyone know if English translations are available?
-
Lol! Falstaff the monster hunter! I love it!!! Beautiful work.
-
Looking at the Geuzen covers, I couldn't help but note that the heroine appears to have a girl friend who dresses like a boy (in typical Shakespearean mode !) and goes armed. The Elizabeth Swann figure (from the same pack as Mistress Giselle) would make a good stand-in for such a character. I'm watching this post with great interest. I also have the Foundry Swashbucklers and Eureka Portugeuse (painting awaiting retirement) and this is giving me lots of ideas.
-
Yep, the Elizabeth Swann figure would make a great female character, I just don't like her hair cut! Maybe I'll green stuff her a more feminine do or find another head for her.
-
I've got all ''Geuzen'' and I can say they're actually very good.
Project is really intresting, will follow it for sure!
-
Two more done, finishing off the figures for the casts for the part of the game.

Nice looking bunches!

Fantastic stuff!

Male, Female, Living, & Living Impaired, they are a FINE LOOKING collection of Rogues. GREAT WORK!

I love the character you add with your painting.

i may have missed this already but the chap in the centre of the photo here, is he a conversion or a model that can be purchased? If not a conversion which company would I need to have a look for?

Please do add battle reports and photos, as you progress. I am greatly enjoying this.
-
I'm due to play a game this coming friday so I'll make sure I post up a report (or at least a link to one on my blog) but in the mean time I have finished the company of spaniards

Great work! :)
-
Love the Spanish arquebus unit. Will there be pikes ?
-
They are looking properly good! :) What a nice work you are making out of those!
-
Thanks guys, I'm enjoying finally putting paint on these guys.
@metternich - the idea is to do pikes eventually but at the scale of the battles I'm looking at doing pike weren't of much use. Most of the warfare in the Low Countries were 'actions', ambushes, raids, that kind of thing. Companies of shot would have been more common so that's what I'm going to focus on. Saying that I do have a guezen pike unit undercoated and ready to go!
-
We had our first game last night. Despite having to go scurrying back to the rule book every so often, we had a great game. here is the full write up http://theleadpile.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/cocksure-gambit.html

Suffice is to say that the villains won. Sir Thomas was captured, Sir Jack is fried and the Lady Giselle has passed a chest full of something dangerous to the Spaniards. Stay tuned for the nest exciting episode!
-
I quite agree that pikes make little sense in a small skirmish action. In most renaissance sieges, when a breach had been made, pikemen generally assaulted the breach using their sidearms (some pike used hedging tools in the a few sieges in the ECW).
-
A fun initial outing. Hopefully there will be many more.
-
Excellent!
-
If it played as WONDERFULLY as it looks you must have had a great evening of it.
-
Considered adding a few Spanish Inquisition members to your baddies ("no one expects the Spanish Inquisition !). Introduction of the Inquisition was one of the horrors that English and Dutch leaders often cited for resistance to Spain, and there are a large number of hooded/masked figures around to add to your dramatis personae. I quite like the image of Inquisitors secretly consorting with forces of darkness.
-
Excellent! 8)

Sorry for the bump. Where can one get those Renn. zombies? I must have them for my zombie games. Thanks.

Hope to see more of your Elizabethan Gothics.

Hey folks. I have returned to the World of Elizabethan Gothique. I've added some monstrous creatures to both sides.
First of all Rabbi Costinov and his Stone Golem.

We also played a game tonight. Once I write it up on the blog I'll come back and show you all some more pics.
-
Excellent. Glad to see your new posts. Please keep us updated as it progresses.

As promised, here are some photos from the game we played last night. Essentially we played a follow on from the last game where Sir Jack and his doughty boys battled against the nefarious Lady Giselle, her monstrous minions and her Spanish Allies in order to rescue Sir Thomas Cocksure from her evil grasp.

Cheers.

Pretty cool, do you have a link to your blog posted?

Oh. It was in my signature. Wonder where it's gone? Gimme a minute to sort that out.
In the meantime http://theleadpile.blogspot.co.uk

just checking if my signature turns up
Thats weird. Doesn't show. Anybody any idea why that might be?
-
FANTASTIC! If your game played as WONDERFULLY as it looks, it must have been a SPLENDID gaming night!
-
Great pix! Looks like a fun time. I especially like the job you did with your tabletop. There's lots of depth and visual interest there for a flat surface. The houses and minis really pop from the picture, while at the same time they blend so well together. Awesome!
Jevenkah
Oh, and the signature only shows up on your first post on a page.
-
Thanks a lot guys, yeah we had a great game.
@ Jevenkah - I didn't know that about the signature, never noticed that before, thanks for pointing it out. I've been scratching my head wondering what was going on!
-
I love the stone Golem. what is the manufacturer ?
-
He's by Graven Images which are available through Hokahey games.
-
Lot of cool stuff here ! Many thanks !

Thanks for that Argonor - Job Done!
-
Thanks for posting the Battle Report and wonderful pictures. Thoroughly delightful. By the way, what's the backstory for how the good rabbi and the golem got there (I assume from Prague? renowned as the most haunted city in Europe - great opportunities for gaming scenarios in that).
-
The good Rabbi has a cousin in Prague who sent him a manuscript and suggested it was the best way to defend the locals from the Spanish. Rabbi costinov followed the instructions and created the Golem. Rumours came to the attention of Sir Jack and he convinced the Rabbi to come to the aid of Sir Thomas.
-
How very ecumenical of the English. And interesting in that Dutch Jews of Spanish descent (many of whom settled in Holland after the expulsion from Spain in 1492) were involved in helping the Dutch resist Spanish invasion . And later, in the later half of the 17th century, Jews of Spanish descent also aided the English in attacking Spanish interests in the Carribean.

Well it's been a while but Sir Thomas, Sir Jack, Giselle and Hurtz came out to cause trouble in the Low countries all over again.
This time we used Donnybrook and made up some rules to cover various details of the characters. It was also the first outing of the German Reiters.

Man, that's some great stuff. :o

Just came to this thread, have to say some wonderfull stuff on here.
Both the miniatures and terrain are gorgeous and the batreps very entertaining.
I'm a bit surprised none of the flemish people on here mentionned the "Bokkenrijders" or Buckriders in english for inspiration.
Here's a wikki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckriders
While they are actually more of an 18th century thing something like them would fit right in with your existing baddies imo.
I look forward to seeing more of your awesome stuff (and may even shamelesly copy some of it in 6mm using microworlds new Fantasy Renaissance / Italian Wars line).

Dixon even makes some:

But, as you say, 18th century rather than 16th century: a bit like translating Bugsy Siegel to the American War of Independence!

This is a wonderful, inspirational thread full of great ideas and beautifully painted figures and terrain.

Bravo for seeing the potential of using the old Warhammer pistoliers as reiters. I have a few I use the same.
